Is there a recommended partitioning for dom0? Here''s what I have planned. /swap 2GB /boot 100MB (ext3) / 5GB (ext3) xenmachines LVM volume group for the remaining diskspace dom0 will install in 5GB / and each domU will have a swap and root logical volume in "xenmachines" Thank you, _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
Hi, There shouldn''t be anything special about partitioning for Xen just plenty of space for the guests you want to run. What you have planned sounds sensible enough. Usualy the main consideration is can the box handle all the work of all guests it will be running. Swap might be a little excessive for dom0. I usualy go with same amount of ram as i allocate to dom0 using dom0_mem as i would with any physical system. 5gig for root is more than plenty to run xen. Geoff. What about using a number of disks, one for dom0 and others for the domUs? They would all be "fighting" I/O on the same disk, right? disk one - dom0 with partitioning as suggested as above. disk two - lvm for domUs. Hi again, I think a lot depends only sure way to know is test it. I use Xen with very low end hardware (PIII''s 512MB ram each) i use no raid and in some cases everything but the root is all on one ide device. It works fine for what i do which is very light weight work loads really. But sure if you need the disk IO performance using more than one disk or raid is very useful. iSCSI seems to be of interest in larger scale deployments. RE: [Xen-users] Recommended partitioning for xen host
Hello, Yes, aggree with Henning - and not only this, I think better is to allocate for Dom0 so much space to store also some future domains after the possible memory-upgrade you can later possibly do - so for example, ich there are 8 positions for memory in the server board, this can be a lot of space... Sure, You have to have enough space on the given server :-) Later to extend the Dom0 could be a liffle bit problem, if all remaining place is used for physical volumes in LVM. I also tested the situation also the Dom0 is installed on LVM - I tried it because of the above argumentation - this is possible, but - is not good - if You have then some problems with LVM, You cannot even boot the Dom0 System what is pretty bad... Another possibility could be to map the directory for saving domain state to some other block device, but I have no idea at this moment what should be done for it - this should be found or possibly changed in the xen scripts. Re: [Xen-users] Recommended partitioning for xen host
By the way, consider how you''re going to partition the guests too... Some distros like to default to using LVM when they install these days. That''s fine and it can help you get some extra functionality in the guest. However, you''ll find it more straightforward to mount the guest FS from dom0 (if you need to) if you just use straight partitions in the guest. Note that you can still use LVM in dom0 to store the domains virtual disks, so you still get the benefits of (one layer of) LVM.
