Thanks to John Day, Tom Richards, Mike Prager, Thomas Lumley, and Goran Brostrom, for various helpful suggestions that finally allowed me to get EMMIX compiled on my Linux (and my Windows) machines. The problem was a simple case-sensitivity issue concerning a single file, which I had correctly downloaded but named using the wrong case ("emmix.max" instead of "EMMIX.max"). Both g77 (under MinG 2.0) and f77 (under RH Linux 7.3) compile the program without problem. I did discover an ancillary problem that took a bit of effort to sort out. Under Windows XP, WinEdt does not capture the EMMIX.f (or EMMIX.max) source files in a standard ASCII text file format that g77 could use properly. Once I saved the file using Notepad (making no changes to the files), the compilation went without a hitch. I'm investigating to see what WinEdt does to the file that causes g77 to choke on it.
