hello I just installed redhat 7.2 and I want to get samba working. I read the man file for smb.conf but there's a question that I just can't figure out. This is what I have : I have a LAN with two win2k workstations and a linux box. This is what I would like to do: I would like to to have each user have access to a public folder and to their own home folder. How do I do that? I used the redhat usermanager gui in gnome to create the accounts. The home directories exists. I can logging with telnet using that account name and password. Now I would like to logging using the same account and password to my [home] share, but it doesn't work. please help f r a n c i s . r e e d freed@videotron.ca -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
At what point do things not work? Is this a password problem? Is it a browsing problem? Don't know much about passwords. Make sure you have encrypted passwords enabled on samba. Looking at the logs with log level = 3 might show the problem. Anyone know where I can get the RPMS for Redhat 7.2 for Samba 2.2.2? Thanks Charles
Hello people! I'm fairly new to Linux and checking it out for possible use by my clients(small city governments). My main interest is using Linux as a file and printer server in a Windows client environment(win98, NT, win2k). I found out rather quickly that I needed to become familiar w/Samba. I have a couple questions that are probably routine for someone out there. The first is regarding printers that are already shared on a Windows client PC. Can I leave such a printer in place and set it up on the Samba server to be used by other Windows clients? I had some success w/this but when I print a test page most of the text was random characters( a driver issue?). The second ? is about folder security. It seems that only one group of users can be associated with a particular folder, can multiple groups, each having different rights, be set up for the same folder? Can one group of users be a member of another group? Thanks for any insight. - John
Hi, I'm a novice to all this samba mumbo jumbo and there doesn't seem to be a novice mailing list =( I have a linux server running redhat 7.2 and about 6 or 7 Windows 98 machines which need access to shares on the server. One of the Windows machines works fine and can access the required shares. The others do not want to even know a thing. Using "netstat" on those machines I get no connections to the server. I can ping the server fine and I have checked all configuration options which are identical to the client that works fine. (well, obviously not!!!) I have even created exactly the same username on both machines in case there was a problem with username access but they work with one client and not with the other. When I type the following at the DOS prompt on the client machine I get the following output: input: net use h: \\gandalf\sds output: error 31: A device attached to the system is not working properly.... Also, no log files get generated for the clients that try to access the server and cannot but log files DO get generated for the machine that works. If anybody has any ideas as to what I could look for it would be most appreciated. Thanks Tom Ansley
