I almost didn't believe in it anymore, but Rcmd INSTALL finally is working
for me!
Thanks to all who helped on this, especially to Guido Masarotto, Brian
Ripley, John Fox, Peter Dalgaard, Uwe Ligges.
Anyway, I do think the documentation is a bit confusing here (at least for
me, I don't know if others have felt the same). It might be a good idea to
add the essence of Brians and Guidos replies to the "Simple ports"
section
of readme.packages ?
As for the link to "tools.zip" (Brian Ripley mentioned that in his
post):
Right, the correct link to this is
"http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/Rtools/tools.zip", and that's where
I
actually got it from.
The confusion stems from the fact that tools.zip (I have downloaded this on
Dec27, 2000) includes (or included?) a file "readme.txt" in which the
wrong
link "http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/bdr/RWin/tools.zip" is (was?)
given.
