[Xen-users] xen 3.2.1 + intel quad core + 8gigs of ram + linux
Hi! Anyone have a suggestion which version of Linux would be the best host? We typically use Ubuntu but we are flexible since we want the best performance and the least amount of headaches getting it installed and working. Thanks, Jimmy _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Personally, I run CentOS, and given the subject, my setup is the same as yours. I have an Asus p5k-vm which as I understand was used in a recent successful vt-d enabled system to pass a pci device through to an hvm. It''s a super cheap solid performer. jlc _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Joseph, Thanks for your reply. Which version of CentOS? Unfortunately I have just not had much luck with using the Ubuntu + zen on this hardware. Generally Ubuntu works great but not everything works great everywhere. Jimmy Joseph L. Casale wrote:> > >Anyone have a suggestion which version of Linux would be the best > host? I like SLES10 (SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10) because they''ve done some good things with VM management (though they don''t always have the latest versions of all of the apps). Personal preference, though - the "best host" version of Linux is very, very subjective. -Nick>>> On 2008/06/02 at 17:14, Jimmy Brake <jimmy@dwalliance.com> wrote:Hi! Nick, After I sent out this email I had second thoughts. Basically what I would like to know is if I can install a fresh OS then install xen from pre-compiled packages that will work on my hardware. I don''t mind compiling and configuring but its my second option. I use RHEL5.2. Recently upgraded (very painlessly) from RHEL5.1 to RHEL5.2 Intel Starlake PSL5000, 2x quad-core, 16gigs FBDIMM, 250G SATA Works great. Obvioulsy, CentOS 5.2 is the free version... --tmac On Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:11 PM, Jimmy Brake <jimmy@dwalliance.com> wrote:> Nick, > > After I sent out this email I had second thoughts. I''m using 2xIntel X5355, 10G mem, RHEL5.2 x86_64. Centos5.2 should work as well. You can install xen either by : - selecting virtualization package group during installation, or - "yum groupinstall Virtualization", if you want to install it later. With this approach you''ll get Redhat''s version of Xen 3.1.2, which should work great if you''re using linux PV guests. It has the added benefit of redhat-supported and greatly simplifies OS update process.> I don''t mind compiling and configuring but its my second option. If you want to use xen 3.2.1 with RHEL5, you can use xen.org''s RPM (or recompile their SRPM, if you use x86_64). This way you can get latest version of xen as well as support for additional PV guests (opensolaris comes to mind). Note that using this approach means you need to edit grub.conf manually during xen installation and kernel upgrades. Re: [Xen-users] xen 3.2.1 + intel quad core + 8gigs of ram + linux
Jimmy, I''ve got a box at home for testing. Gigabyte M/B with 8GB RAM. CentOS 5.1 x86_64 If you''ve got > 4GB RAM I understand you have to use a 64bit distro. I''ve got not problems running it. Been going a couple of months. After install just type: yum install kernel-xen Cheers Chris On Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 12:11 PM, Jimmy Brake <jimmy@dwalliance.com> wrote:> Nick, > > After I sent out this email I had second thoughts. Re: [Xen-users] xen 3.2.1 + intel quad core + 8gigs of ram + linux
Jimmy, SLES10, CentOS 5.1, and RHEL5U1 all come with Xen as pre-compiled packages. You should be able to do a fresh install with any of these and install the Hypervisor tools, as well. -Nick>>> On 2008/06/02 at 20:11, Jimmy Brake <jimmy@dwalliance.com> wrote:Nick, After I sent out this email I had second thoughts.
