At work I have been given the task of building and testing a Samba server. After several days of not being able to get the server to show up in Network Neighborhood, I think I have discovered the problem. The business uses an audio stream from Live365.com, apparently that is causing the other computers to not see the Samba server in Network Neighborhood. Pinging the server proves connectivity, as does logging into the Webmin service on the machine. When I shut down the audio stream the Samba server almost instantly became available and remained available even after the audio stream was restarted (I tested this 3 times, all with the same result). So, it looks like it's a problem with identification only. My questions are: 1. Does Samba have problems in the presence of network congestion? 2. Are there any tuning tips for nmbd? 3. Any suggestions on how to get my pointy haired boss to listen to the radio and quit wasting bandwidth?;-) My thanks to the list for their consideration. James
Make certain your server netbios name is not the same as your NT or www domain name. Wins freaks over things like that, often causing the network neighborhood to disappear altogether. Additionally, run wins on only one machine. Double check. [Samba] NetBIOS problems in presence of audio stream?
I wonder if a switch (instead of de hub) would help? -----Original Message----- From: James Austin [mailto:jraustin@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2002 5:55 PM To: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: [Samba] NetBIOS problems in presence of audio stream? Are there any tuning tips for nmbd? You may want to examine the "lm announce" and "lm interval" global parameters. They may possibly help out in this situation. But the main thing is to make sure you have proper NetBIOS name resolution. Best, by far, is a WINS server, next (and last) is using lmhosts files. Using a WINS server pretty much automates everything. When using lmhosts files every system needs a copy which you must keep updated if anything changes (IP addresses, adding a new system, etc.). You didn't mention how you were handling NetBIOS name resolution. See http://www.realcomputerguy.com/lmhosts.htm for lmhosts information. Once you have your resolution of choice you may want to use the global parameter "name resolve order" to tweak Samba's performance. Since I use a WINS server and no lmhosts files (since IP addresses are assigned dynamically via DHCP - with lmhosts you would need static IP addresses), a change to "name resolve order = wins host bcast" is made. Since lmhosts will never be valid I simply drop it. And since WINS is always dynamically updated and the best place (in my case - and virtually anyone else who is running a WINS server) to resolve NetBIOS names I place it first in the list. [Samba] NetBIOS problems in presence of audio stream?
Chris,> An "NT" name, would be considered by most, the same as the NetBIOS name. > When one names an NT box it is the NetBIOS name. Same is actually true > of Windows 2000 and later, the hostname is still the NetBIOS name even > though in a Windows 2000 AD domain the FQDN is used as the primary > naming convention along with its resolution tools (DNS) as opposed to > the NetBIOS name and its tools (WINS).you are talking about different name spaces. If you are configured a DNS-Name like "aaa" in properties of TCP/IP for your ethernet-card and a NETBIOS-name of "bbb" in properties of My_computer in NT/w2k/xp, then you have different names. It is not recommended but you can do this. And you can do this also with samba, see "netbios name" in smb.conf. der tom ______________________________________________________________________________ Den Komfort von WEB.DE FreeMail nutzen, aber die alten E-Mail-Adressen nicht aufgeben?
