I looked through all the docs, mail archives, etc, and the only references to the lmhosts file I found were with respect to the *client* lmhosts file. Call me an idiot (not uncommon :-), but it didn't occur to me that I needed an lmhosts file on the *server* side; I thought it would do all name lookups via /etc/hosts (without enabling WINS). Poking around on this further, I believe the LMHOSTS error does not matter. The smb directive "name resolve order" defaults to "lmhosts wins host bcast" -- so I believe the file no found error is just because it's trying lmhosts first, not finding the file and then moving on.
