lmhosts questions (answered?)
...rustrating when you're trying to do it
from the seat of one's pants (as it were). Also, a big thanks to
the samba team members (one of these days, I'll have to look into
that pizza voucher thing...).
I looked through all the docs, mail archives, etc, and the only
references to the lmhosts file I found were with respect to the
*client* lmhosts file. Call me an idiot (not uncommon :-), but it
didn't occur to me that I needed an lmhosts file on the *server*
side; I thought it would do all name lookups via /etc/hosts
(without enabling WINS). I think this is definitely a topic...

Where is lmhosts?
Hello
Someone who has working lmhosts please tell me where it is (i.e., the path).
I RTFMd man lmhosts and:
1) man hosts tells: SYNOPSIS: /etc/hosts.
2) man lmhosts doesn't tell anything about the path.
3) man lmhosts: "It is very similar to the /etc/hosts file format" - does
it mean that the similarity is also in the pla...

this may be a remedial question, but uh, what's /etc/lmhosts supposed to

dsdb_access Access check failed on CN=Configuration
Poking around on this further, I believe the LMHOSTS error does not matter.
The smb directive "name resolve order" defaults to "lmhosts wins host bcast" -- so I believe the file no found error is just because it's trying lmhosts first, not finding the file and then moving on.
Eventually it hits "host" resolution an...

/etc/lmhosts
Has anyone had any luck with lmhosts.
I'm trying to avoid using the -I 192.168.1.10 to identify a Win95 machine
when using smbmount
Is there an option I need to set in Samba to tell it to use /etc/lmhosts?

how to define share for sharing lmhosts?
Hi All,
Probably simple question: I want to make a share for sharing an lmhosts
file which gets included by the clients. This share has to be very
public and accept nullsessions (whatever that me be (no username and
password?)).
I want this because I need to generate aliases on the fly for for our
fileserver for some clients (terminalservers specifically). So I thought

Client login delays - especially after reboot
...IP's with clients on 192.168.0.2-9 and our
dsl PPPoA service runs on 10.0.0.1
Although I am not a dns expert I think Bind is working, I can ping client
ip's and hostnames and nmblookup seems to resolve reverse dns but i'm not
100% on this. I have clients maped to host/IP in /etc/hosts, lmhosts and
tried changing the samba resolve order but cannot resolve these login
delays.
If anyone can point me in the right direction on this I would be greatfull.

OpenBSD 3.3 and samba-2.2.8
Hi and hello.
Does anyone have installed Samba using the ports-collection in OpenBSD
recently?
My WindowsXP-computers can't find the computer on the network at all. I use
the standard smb.conf wich comes with the port-installation, exept these
changes:

encrypted passwords = yes
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2.0./24 192.168.3.0/255.255.255.0

that MB is NOT a samba server). Since WINS only provides the broadcast
address of the remote LMB and that broadcast will not reach the remote LAN,

put the name of remote workgroup LMB (other than the remote samba server)
in the lmhosts file (since lmhosts permits the use of that 16th host type byte)

nmbd acting as a wins server gives negative query response for hosts and lmhosts addresses
Dear all,
I'm setting up a wins server configuration with Samba 3.0.24

bind interfaces only = Yes

I'm trying to make certain it's working correctly.
The command:
