Nmbd errors & not starting since upgrade to 3.0.2a?
I have recently upgraded my Redhat 7.3 server to Fedora FC1 with all related updates. I also upgraded my samba version from 3.0.0 to 3.0.2a. It now seems that my nmbd daemon will not start & subsequently I cannot log in from any Windows client as the netbios server name PDC is not found I think. Before this problem started, I noticed that in order for my DNS ping requests from Windows clients to work I had to periodically restart the smb service every 4 hrs. or so.The pinging of all clients by IP address was fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Slow Samba share--why?
...d (135 seconds instead of 111). This seems normal. I ran ethereal on Sarge and captured logs for both the slow and the fast copy. The fast copy (Woody) repeats this pattern over and over again: 959 SMB Read Request (115 bytes) 960 SMB Read Response (1514 bytes) 961 TCP [Continuation to #961] netbios-ssn > 1043 ACK (1514 bytes) 962 TCP [Continuation to #962] netbios-ssn > 1043 PSA, ACK (1318 bytes) 963 TCP 1043 > netbios-ssn ACK (963 bytes) The slow copy (from XP) has two similar SMB packets ("Read AndX Request" instead of "Read Request"), but from there on the s...

NetBIOS over TCP/IP versus direct hosting over TCP/IP
>From Microsoft web site (Windows 2000 Resource Kit): "Windows 2000 uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP to communicate with prior versions of Windows NT and other clients, such as Windows 95. However, the Windows 2000 redirector and server components now support direct hosting for communicating with other computers running Windows 2000. With direct hosting, NetBIOS is not used for name r...

NetBios problem with Samba 2.x
I'm in a bit of a pickle, and I need some help. I'm forced to disable netbios on any machine that leaves the company because of how MS Exchange works over a VPN. I have Samba 2.x on two Compaq Tru64 5.x machines, each with one (public) share. With netbios enabled, the client machines can access the share with no issues. With netbios disabled, I get something like "No...

I can kill the smbmount with kill -15 but the share is still
