R help - Feb 2001 - R works in KDE but not in Gnome

I have a Red Hat 7.0 system, plus glibc-2.2 and gcc-2.96.69. When I run the
R demo 'demo("graphics") with KDE it runs fine, but when I try it
with Gnome
it croaks:

	Error: X11 cannot allocate additional graphics colors.
Consider using X11 with colortype="pseudo.cube" or
"gray".

This has happened with every release of R I've tried; the latest is
R-base-1.2.1-2. BTW, if it matters, the display is set to 800x600, 8-bit
color. But it works with KDE.

Most likely this is due to the pretty background and all the snazzy
little shaded icons in GNOME eating up all available colors, of which
you'll only have 256 in 8-bit mode. KDE is more cartoon-like and uses
fewer colors. I think you need to up your display to at least 16-bit
or stay away from GNOME. Or take the hint from the error message and
do

x11(color="pseudo.cube")
demo(graphics)
