Hi!
First the question "How fast are the encoders/decoders?" ( quoted below ) in the FAQ ( http://www.vorbis.com/faq.psp ) should be updated to include v1.0. What is the phrase "most commercial audio encoders" referring to ? commercial vorbis encoders ? Quote : --begin quote--- How fast are the encoders/decoders? Right now the encoder is about as fast as most commercial audio encoders (and about twice as fast as beta 3), but not nearly as fast as some others. Since we are using unoptimized beta code, this is to be expected. As the vorbis tools mature they will become faster. The decoding is roughly the same complexity as MP3 decoding, and once the Vorbis decoding tools are optimized, they should decode at similar speeds. Decoding speed has increased 3-4x over the first beta already, after the first stage of optimization. --end quote---
Also in simple terms , what is the minimum CPU required for real time playback of "common" vorbis files ( stereo, 44.1kHz, bitrate about 100-200 kbps ) ? I plan to buy an old laptop to be used as an universal media player in my car.

Also the following is said in the FAQ : "no free integer-based Vorbis decoder exists at the moment" Need I say more ?
Regards, david --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. I'd suggest a Pentium 166 would be the minimum processor to decode such files comfortably in real time. -- Paul Martin <pm@zetnet.net> --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. However, that's only a problem on limited hardware like portable players. I believe Paul Martin's recommendation of ~166+ MHz is good - you might even get lower than that, because you probably don't need graphical players like Winamp or XMMS. (Try before buy would be a good idea, i suppose.) And yes, the FAQ seems pretty outdated in quite a few parts. :P
Moritz --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. My old (and dead, by now) AMD K5 PR133 @ 100 MHz never had any difficulties with decoding MP3. If it's really true that a Vorbis-file requires less processing speed, even a Pentium @ 100 MHz might do the job :-). Mpxplay (http://mpxplay.cjb.net) can play Vorbis 1.0 encoded files on an AMD 5x86 133mhz with ca. 70-75% CPU usage and betaN (beta3,beta4) encoded files with 90-95% ... But it's a DOS player and it handles/supports just a few soundcards... regards Attila

--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body.
