Hello, I have installed samba 3.0.2a as PDC and BDC, I am able to add windows xp to domain and have added all the registry patches to windows xp, but when it comes to domain logon on windows xp client, the behaviour is very erratic, sometimes I am able to logon to domain and sometimes the domain logon fails, we need to restart the xp machine and keep trying to the domain logon. The error we receive is "domain controller is not available", we are facing this problem with a network of 15 xp clients everyday few of the the clients randomly are able to logon and rest of the few are not able to logon. Please suggest me some solution to this problem. Thanks, Honey
You said that you are using samba as both the PDC and the BDC. What are you using for the pass backend and how are you replicating the info? Hi Brett, I am using smbpasswd backend, and using rsync to replicate the information. Sascha, I am a bit new to samba and wins, can you explain in a bit detail, and one thing I would like to know is it necessary to have DNS server to have windows xp logon to domain. Thanks, Honey Ok, think I got a solution for u, because I figured out the same problem and it took me very long to hear on the lists opinion... ;-) I got the following configuration on the pdc: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<PDC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wins support = Yes wins hook = /usr/local/bin/dns_update wins partners = 192.168.10.2 192.168.10.3 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<PDC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> and on the bdc: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<BDC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wins server = 192.168.10.1 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<BDC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Search for the dns_update-script, you'll find in in the docs. (/usr/share/doc/samba-3.0.4/examples/wins_hook/ on my system) That will help u keeping ur dns up to date for use with wins-emulation... After u configure the wins on all ur windows clients and u'll see all ur problems are blown with the wind... Greetings Sascha Am Montag, 31. The entries in the DNS you are looking for are the SRV entries. Especially _gc, _ldap, and _kerberos for the logon process. Marcus
