Is there an improved BackupExec Unix agent available that works with Samba? If not, can someone tell me how to work around the lack of the archive bit that Linux has? In particular, RedHat Linux 7.2 is the system I'm looking for help on. I found the following hints in an older version of this newsletter, Samba Digest, Vol. 3, Issue 34, sent March 21, 2003, that had this in it: Yes, we have been using the Linux agent for some time now on 3 of our Samba servers with BackupExec 8.5 on NT. It works well, once you figure out how to adjust the backup scheme to take into account the lack of an archive bit, which limits the types of backups that can be done. This was submitted by Shawn Wright. Andrew Barbara immediately posted a question about how Shawn had solved his problem, but I have found no reply since then. If these people or anyone else has solved the same problem, please respond. Thanks, Kevin Bramblett

(We are using an older version of BackupExec; perhaps newer versions have solved the problem.) The Unix Agent for BackupExec (available from Veritas' FTP server) is really independant of Samba. By installing the BackupExec Agent for Unix (binary only, sadly) on our Linux system (running Debian Stable with a 2.6.6 kernel) the server then appeared in the list of BackupExec Agents in the program on the NT server. Testing showed that Unix permissions were saved and restored correctly using the BackupExec Agent - something that I did not think would happen had the files been restored using Samba. The documentation on Vertias' website suggests that it is still not possible to do differential backups from a Unix system (presumably because of the lack of an archive bit. To get around this limitation, in the longer term I am looking at using rsync to backup to either a co-located server or removable hard-drives. HTH, Tony
On BackupExec 9.0, if I create a job and go down into Settings->General in the Backup Method box there is a dropdown which talks about the different methods that can be used. Try the ones that don't involve the Archive Bit and see if they are closer to your needs than the default. I haven't done this myself so I can't give you more than that. We use BackupExec for Windows Version 9.0 and Unix Agent, Version 5.01 to backup our Linux file systems. We are able to do incremental backups. Pretty stable and fast too. You certainly don't want to use samba share if you can have access through BE's Unix Agent. --Yu Wang Information Technology Services University of North Florida (904) 620-2820 -----Original Message----- From: samba-bounces+ywang=unf.edu@lists.samba.org [mailto:samba-bounces+ywang=unf.edu@lists.samba.org]On Behalf Of Kevin Bramblett Sent: Friday, June 18, 2004 1:53 PM To: 'Tony Whitmore' Cc: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: RE: [Samba] BackupExec Agent on Samba That is what I have found. We are able to backup using our Samba shares using BackupExec For Windows version 9.0. I have been looking for a faster way to backup our data as the samba side is very slow. 1) To setup this in BackupExec 9.0 for Windows, click on Edit, Edit Selection List, choose a job type, then with Selections (under Source in the Properties window) and View Format being Graphical, in the box with the network tree, choose Remote Selections, Microsoft Windows Network, the domain where the Linux box with Samba is, the Linux Box itself (this will take lots of time), and finally the shares will show up. Choose what you wish here. 2) Next, go to User-defined Selections, and find your choices you just selected above. If they do not show, add a new User-defined Selection using UNC format. Note: you need to do both 1) and 2) to get this to work. This works for us, but it is very slow. I was hoping to find some tweaks to speed it up. For those who are wondering, we are using Samba 2.2.7-3.7.2 on a RedHat Linux 7.2 Server. Hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: Tony Whitmore [mailto:tonywhitmore@users.sourceforge.net] Sent: Friday, June 18, 2004 11:37 AM To: Kevin Bramblett Cc: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: Re: [Samba] BackupExec Agent on Samba Kevin Bramblett wrote:> Is there an improved BackupExec Unix agent available that works with > Samba?
