BackupExec Agent on Samba
Is there an improved BackupExec Unix agent available that works with Samba? If not, can someone tell me how to work around the lack of the archive bit that Linux has? In particular, RedHat Linux 7.2 is the system I'm looking for help on. I found the following hints in an older version of this newsletter, Samba Digest, Vol....

BackupExec 8.5/NT + Samba 2.2
Hi, Does anyone have experience with BackupExec and Samba? BackupExec refuse to access Samba shares. Windows shares are OK, but all my Samba shares are not. I have Samba on at least 2 Linux 2.4 machines + 1 on Solaris. Neither ones work with BExec. Any idea? Other have experience with BExec and Samba? Thanks a lot -jec _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _...

Samba and BackupExec
Hi, I've got Samba 2.0.2 and a server NT4 SP3 with Seagate BackupExec 7.0. When I want to backup Samba with Seagate BackupExec, I get a message saying "Unable to connect to server, <F5> to retry", and then another one saying "A device specific error occured". I've read all the Samba archive about that subject, but I do not find any solu...

Subject: Samba and Seagate BackupExec
Hi Franck, to my knowledge, the Backup Exec service "runs" under a certain user. In most cases it is the user who installed it, so very often "Administrator". Now if you try to backup a Samba share, Backup Exec tries to retrieve the files of this share and has to authenticate to the Samba Server. I suspect it will do this with the "credentials" of the user the Backup

Backup problem too with Seagate BackupExec
...s on this problem (I've searched in the archive of course and I've sent a message on this mailing list, the suggestions had helped me but I didn't manage to resolve the problem). The problem: ------------ I've got Samba 2.0.2 on a Linux Red Hat 5.2 and a server NT4 SP3 with Seagate BackupExec 7.0. When I want to backup Samba with Seagate BackupExec, I get a message saying "A device specific error occured" and another saying "Unable to connect to server, <F5> to retry". I upgraded with the Seagate BackupExec 7.2 evaluation for test, but I got exactly the same...

Restoring original file permissions
Hello, I've compiled and configured Samba 1.9.18p8 on a DEC Alpha running DEC Unix 4.0b for the express purpose of enabling a Windows NT 4.0 server running Seagate BackupExec software to be able to see my Unix filesystems as NT shares and back them up (as of this time BackupExec does not support DEC Unix clients). Test backups have worked OK, but I'm having problems restoring the original file permissions. The "create mask" configuration file parameter...

CentOS 6.4 Samba 3.6.9 Regression
Anyone know the reason RHEL bumped Samba from 3.5.10 to 3.6.9? This version has a regression with BackupExec and Veeam backing up to network shares. I receive access denied errors. Samba is in security=user mode and not joined to a domain. If I downgrade just the Samba packages to the CentOS 6.3 version 3.5.10 everything works again. I've found a couple of bug reports and the one suggested fix "a...

Losing access to drive within XP
...tials. But something is happening between Windows 2000 and the Samba server causing Windows to get confused. Up until 3 weeks ago, we were using a Windows 2000 file server, so Samba is the only new introduction. I'm dedicated to getting this Samba solution to work, despite the crappy support by BackupExec that I'm finding with my backups, but this is something I'd like to nip in the bud, if I can. I'm running 3.0.20b on SuSE 10.0. I'm using the Suse rpms, except I rebuilt them to include the idmap_rid support. Here's my smb.conf [global] unix charset = LOCALE wo...

NT Administrator account changes permissions when logging onto samba server
...Administrator (logged into the Samba server). The problem is that any NT permissions that I've put onto the Administrator account are not there when I'm logged in on the domain. When I go back to logging in locally, permissions are all fine. What I'm trying to do is to run Veritas' BackupExec on an NT server and be able to backup files on the linux box (main server). When I try to run the front end I get a permissions error - that the account must be an administrator or a backup operator. I go into the Administrator account (local) and set the backup account to Administrator *and* back...

Backing up CentOS
Can anyone suggest a good open source/free backup software that works on CentOS? I was reading through the manuals on how to back things up and it said do 1 of 2 things. Buy a 3rd party software packages or make one from source. Well I have no clue how to do the 2nd option and I don't want to spend any money so I figured I would as you gurus. BTW I am newb so easier the software the better.

Is rsync copying over the entire file? Sent bytes matches actual file size.
...003 Rsync.exe cygpopt-0.dll cygwin1.dll I have just tested rsync with a 571Mb zip file containing our Backup Exec installation source. The command I am running is: rsync -avp --delete --progress --stats /cygdrive/c/rsync_test/ "/cygdrive/Y/" > rsync_log.txt First I copied the file BackUpExec-11D.7170_32BIT_VERSION.zip into both source and target and ran an rsysnc (I didn't have the progress or stats switches on the first run). This is what my log shows: building file list ... 0 files... 2 files to consider ./ Number of files: 2 Number of files transferred: 0 Total file size: 5...

Couldn't find service $
Hi, I've a problem with my Samba servers accessed from an NT server. My NT server is able to see every Samba server (both version 2.0.7 and 2.2 and both Linux and Solaris) But on this same machine, the backup program BackupExec can't see any of these shares! It say "Device specific error" and in the samba log files I see: "Couldn't find service $" I don't know which service it's trying to find but the same operation (just browsing in the directories) on NT servers works fine and it'...

Challenge to experts: Is archive bit so difficult?
...eration failed. All the files belong to a group called user. This group can read the file but do not have write right on the files not owned by them. But since the operator is in root group, this should not matter. I search the archive and someone mentioned that samba 2.2.4 fixed something to make BackupExec to work. I upgraded to samba 2.2.5, however it did not solve my problem. Thanks, Bing Zhang

ACL issues still unresolved
Hi all, The two problems I'm having with ACLs on a W2k domain are still no closer to a solution. To wit, they were: (a) Users accessing the ACL properties dialog on W2k can modify and remove existing ACLs on a given file, but they cannot add new ones (that can only be done with setfacl on the cmdline; the changes are then recognised); (b) In said ACL properties dialog, the usernames
