Smbclient still works perfectly... Anyone can give me a light?
PS: getent group or passwd shows only the users of the linux box (from

Subject: Winbind and Smbstatus
Hi all,
I am trying to setup samba with winbind so I can use our existing nt domain
architecture. I am trying this using the latest cvs from samba_2_2 (today)
on a rh 7.1 box.
My problem is I can't connect to a share from any windows client as it asks
for username and password (the share is set to public = no). Smbstatus shows
user nobody is trying to connect.
Now the strange thing: smbclient works perfectly. I set up a share on my
computer with access only to my domain user. Doing a 'smbclient //mypc/share
-U mydomainuser' works perfectly.
I don't know what could possibly be wrong, but I guess that's something
to
do with PAM.
I configured samba with the options --with-pam --with-smbmount
--with-acl-support --with-winbind --with-quotas
I set up /etc/pam.d/passwd as follows:
auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so use_first_pass shadow
nullok
account required /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
And /etc/pam.d/samba as follows:
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so nullok shadow
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
Do I need to change/add anything in these /etc/pam.d/* files?
Cheers
Gustavo

"chkconfig swat on"
to turn it on. Then make xinetd reload its configuration:

Hi -
I'm running into problems with adding a user and trying to use the Netscape
browser to bring up SWAT. My environment is Solaris 2.7 on a Sparc5
workstation - we use NFS/automount/NIS+ I have installed Samba on a test
system before doing so on our main server (Enterprise 4000). Any advice as
to what my error(s) are would be most appreciated.
Whenever I try to add a user, I receive the following:
Using Unix account login and password:
make_sam_from_nisresult: NIS+ lookup failure: Database for table does not
exist. Failed to add entry for user joeuser. Failed to modify password entry
for user joeuser.
NT and Unix are two different universes here (so this means that the
userid/password will not be the same for both accounts) - currently the user
accesses the Unix side from his/her PC via eXceed (xterm). Originally I had
configured Samba with both the "--with-nisplus" and
--with-automount" flags
but I was unable to add a user (tested it with my account info.) Next I
tried reconfiguring Samba with just the "--with-automount" flag (got
the
same error message) and then I tried it without any flags whatsoever (still
got the same error message). I'm also unable to run SWAT - tried using both
http://localhost:901 and http://my_system_name:901 - I believe I have the
/etc/services set up correctly:
netbios-ns 137/udp # Samba nmbd
netbios-ssn 139/tcp # Samba smbd
swat 901/tcp # Samba swat
I first tested out the Samba daemons:
# smbclient -U% -L localhost
INFO: Debug class all level = 3 (pid 1285 from pid 1285)
added interface ip=160.205.18.15 bcast=160.205.18.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to LOCALHOST failed (Not listening for calling name)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Not listening for calling name)
I then tried manually starting the Samba daemons:
# /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
# /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D
When I check the system output file in /usr/local/samba/var I see this:
# tail -f log.smbd

(Remember I'm just trying to set this up as "simple" as possible -
I need to
get this working first!)
The other changes I made were to "nsswitch.conf":
1. I commented out this line:
# consult /etc "files" only if nisplus is down.
#hosts: files nisplus dns [NOTFOUND=return] files
and uncommented this line:
#Uncomment the following line, and comment out the above, to use both DNS
#and NIS+. You must also set up the /etc/resolv.conf file for DNS name
#server lookup. See resolv.conf(4).
hosts: nisplus dns [NOTFOUND=return] files
And final act was to comment out the "tcpwrappers" (this is installed
on the
main server and some Unix clients) I had originally added in /etc/inetd.conf
for "netbios-ssn", "netbios-ns", and "swat":
shell stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/wrappers/tcpd in.rshd
login stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/wrappers/tcpd in.rlogind
exec stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/wrappers/tcpd in.rexecd

Nope, I'm running Red Hat, but I hate how it setup groups, so I guess I
switched to the Slack style (I've never used Slack). :-) I have all regular
users in the users group, and administrative users (such as myself), in the
admin group.
On the topic of the add user script, I was trying to implement something
that isn't implemented. :-) My Samba server is the PDC, and I wanted to be
able to add users via Windows clients . . . evidently, based upon e-mails
from Samba developers, this isn't possible right now. Oh well . . . have a
good one!

run "ntsysv" and enable swat option the execute "service xinetd
reload".
If that doesn't work check if you have the file /etc/xinetd.d/swat

I was playing around with the debug levels, smb.conf and stuff. The
following entry in smb.conf was the problem:
name resolve order = lmhosts hosts wins bcast
After I changed it to:
Name resolve order = bcast
Winbind started working. Now I only changed it to = lmhosts bcast and it is
still working. Wbinfo returns all info I need (despite I get a few
getgrent(): out of memory in log.winbindd - is this normal?).
I can't tell why, but hosts or wins weren't succesful. Are there any
problems if I just let it with bcast?
Cheers
Gustavo
