Hello. New poster, apologies in advance for any lapse in etiquette. I
can't locate any applicable FAQ, so I'd appreciate a URL rather
than a short sharp acronym ;-)
I have two epson printers on my Suse 7.2 server (samba 2.2.0) - a
lazer and an inkjet (a stylus color 1200). Their configuration is
identical (bar names and descriptions) same properties on the
spool directories (which I moved to trouble shoot this) same
printcap config, same smb.conf entries.
It was all running perfectly on a rather pensionable Redhat
distribution, but I needed the more recent binaries and kernel.
I've tried two NT4 installations; the Lazer prints fine, but I can't
print
to the inkjet. I get
test page failed to print. would you like to view the trouble shooter
(etc etc - no!). access is denied.
permissions reported by NT are the same as the lazer -
everyone: print,
linuxserver\root (root): full control
One of the NT builds is getting due for a rebuild, but the other is
basically clean, it had never had the drivers installed, hadn't even
been involved with network resources, so I tried it from scratch
there. Same problem. Lazer, no problem. Inkjet: access denied.
On my NT2000 system, though, I can print to the inkjet. It was
clean install of the Epson sourced driver (the Windows 2K driver I
have installed for local printing has a different name so it didn't
recognise it)
The user on the laptop and the user on my main NT4 build are the
same username and password, so they're both using the same
user on the samba server.
I can only think that the NT4 driver doesn't like dealing with the way
Samba now presents shared printers?
I'm off to see if I can install a plain text or compatible driver and try
that, but I'd appreciate any other suggestions.
thanks in advance, Ben.

Hi all,
Here is what I'm trying to do:
I want to create multiple virtual servers on my samba host, and in each
vserver .conf load a specific msdfs root.
I compiled the samba source --with-msdfs
I created 5 netbios aliases: admin sales software hardware and
accounting
I built smb.conf.<netbios alias neme> files
I included smb.conf.%l in smb.conf
I can see alll of the aliased servers in network neighborhood fine.
I created the multiple DFS root folders and the appropriate symlinks
I can see the associated DFS root and all of the links on each
(actually, I'm only testing msdfs on the ADMIN vserver now)vserver from
windows, yet no other files show up in the explorer. Is doing this even
possible? It seemed so cool -I'm hoping I'm just missing something.
attached is smb.conf, smb.conf.admin, and a testparm dump
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi all,
Using RH 6.2 and samba-2.2.0 the functions close and
read were passed the struct files_struct which had
fsp_name set to the path and file name in question.
After upgrading to RH7.1 and samba-2.2.1a this is
set to NULL in both functions.
Is this a RH problem ?
or a samba-2.2.1a problem ?
if so, is it feature or a bug ?
Thanks all,

We also recently had a problem with memory usage, although in 2.0.10.
There was a memory leak which was causing the parent smbd to get very
large, and therefore all spawned smbd's for each new connection. This
problem was not only in 2.0.10, but earlier versions. Richard
Bollinger provided a patch (see attached) which seems to have fixed
the problem.
We also found that the memory requirements under Solaris seemed to be
quite a bit higher than that under linux (on cobalt qubes). The size
of the smbd's was also dependent on the number of shares you were
providing. For example, on one particular installation on solaris 8,
samba 2.0.10 (after patch installtion):
35 shares:
SIZE RES-MEM
parent smbd 2952 1560
each new smbd (for each new sessions) 4568 2416
313 shares:
SIZE RES-MEM
parent smbd 3536 1784
each new smbd (for each new sessions) 5080 2968
Also, old smbd processes were no "going away". To recover resources,
we set the "deadtime" parameter to 5. This removed any inactive
processes after 5 minutes.
Hope this helps.

I'm running RH7.0 with the newest RPM you have available.
I have Win2k on my clients. Here is the problem. When in
Autocad 2000i i can perform a task called Move to PS when
i 1st start the program. after a few writes to the server using various
temp files I'm not able to use the Move to PS and others that write temp
files to the server and then recall them and erase them. The files are not
usable even though
they are there. This only happens on WIN2K with NTFS file systems all the
Win98
clients work fine all the time. Any ideas as to what setting I can change to
remedy this?
Thanks, Robert

And you thank that is bad. You auto read the HOWTOs and try to execute them
in RH 7.1. Now there is a real harrow story unless you are a real

The crashes my system make. It generates a core dump at least once per 5
minutes and for gosh sakes stay away from K office unless you want the whole
system to go down.
But as far as the rest nothing you have it about right.
The best way to think of RH 7.1 is that it is a beta edition.

Well, just a final word and warning about the lexmark z53 printer.
It seems to be a fine printer and lexmark supports it with drivers made for
linux. I'd buy it again. However,...
It requires two way communication with the printer for optimal results, which
seems
impossible over a network, and the printer really needs to be attached to the
computer
sending the print job, preferably by a direct cable connection and not with a
switch box.
This seems to work with linux, since the printing software can reside on
the server and run there; but, with windows, the printing software runs on
the windows client only and two way communication is not possible. I am
having no trouble with plain text files but I haven't really pushed it yet,
either.
So, with samba, and the printer on a linux server, turn off two way
communication with the
printer in the z53 configuration tool on the windows client. Otherwise,
printing won't work.
The other problem with the printer is the (my) inability to store and
download the drivers from the linux server to allow easy installation on the
windows
client.
I tried this several times, installing the drivers twice on the linux
server with make_printerdef. Each time, although I uninstalled the z53 and z32
drivers on my
windows clients, I got an error message that a certain lexmark file was in use.
After installation, windows wouldn't start properly until I started it up in
dos mode and removed the installed lexmark files by hand. Removing the
lexmark icon from the windows startup directory didn't help.
Installing straight from the cdrom worked fine on windows, except for the long
annoying
hangups before you can get to the configuration tool to disable two way
communication.
The conclusion, as if this is any news, is that windows is a pain to work with.

Hi,
The /samba/survey and whishlist areas seem very orhpaned and out-dated
(and the maintainer's home page address is 404, hence this message).
Perhaps:
- remove/hide until new maintain is found?
- update them?
The wish-list information is actually quite intresting.

Running Red Hat 7.0, and have set up a samba (smbfs) mount in /etc/fstab to a
WinME box. The mount works fine. I just set up the printer so I can print
using the WinME printer, HP 600c deskjet. When I set it up using the Linux
"printtool," it only listed drivers that are available on the Linux
box. I'm
not at all happy with their quality. Is there a way to configure the system so
it uses the drivers on the WinME computer instead?
Thanks,
Glen

There are NT and 2k workstation here, joining Samba 2.2.1a domain on a
Solaris 7 box.
I can't create share folder from workstation becasue the sharing option is
disappear when I right click on a folder.
If I login to local account, not login to domain, the sharing option
appear, so most of the users here force to login locally instead of login
to Domain.
Anyone can advice how to solve this problem?
Thanks!

Windows saves the end of line with a ^M (actually the control character for
the <enter> key) in text files. You can run the files through a little
program called unix2dos and redirect them into a new file (prompt$> unix2dos
<filename> > <newfilename>) if you have it on your system. If
you do not
have unix2dos on your system, you can remove them with a sed substitution
(prompt$> cat <filename> | sed 's/^M//' >
<newfilename>). In the example I
just showed you, the ^M is not what you literally type, you will need to
type <Ctrl v> then <enter> to get the actual control char for sed to
replace...
have fun :o)

This creates the users in the smbpasswd file. But all accounts will
be disabled. Look at the script to see what it is doing. You have to
set the encrypted samba passwords for the users with the smbpasswd
command.

Hi ,
I have a solaris2.6 machine,
i have configured samba2.0 , conf file is like this.
security = server
encrypt passwords = yes
password server = wapsrv
apart from this i didnt change any default values..
when i go to MS windows NT machine and type //unixmachine/login
it is prompting for user name and password.
but it is not accepting the username and password.
iam providing the user name and password which is there in NT PDC (wapsrv)
error log file is like this...
[2001/08/27 16:01:59, 1] smbd/password.c:server_validate(1121)
password server WAPSRV rejected the password
[2001/08/27 16:01:59, 0] smbd/reply.c:reply_sesssetup_and_X(771)
NT Password did not match ! Defaulting to Lanman
anything else should i need to do on samba file or on my NT pdc.?

No. You have to use the windows printer drivers on the windows box and the
linux drivers on the linux box.
That said, I did see a commercial product, not very expensive, a while
back, that allowed windows to process, including print, postscript files.
There was even a print spooler included, and the product was touted as a
way to spool and print postscript files on a windows box. I downloaded it
and used it a bit. It worked for processing postscript files nicely in a
windows environment.
SO, if you must have a windows driver to filter your linux print
jobs, that might be a solution. Of course, I have forgotten the name of this
thing.
However, are you sure there are no good drivers for the HP 600c?

There is a document with samba, DIAGNOSIS.text, which I wish I had known

I have only a performance question. I'm about to look at the source, but
thought I'd throw out a question regarding performance and the size of
private/smbpasswd.
Our file is 17587 entries with 1564 of them being machine accounts.
Can anyone see an issue with many people logging in at the same time? I'm
curious if smbpasswd is searched sequentially, hashed, or some other
means.
Classes are beginning today and I'm a bit curious...
Thanks!
Bill

Sorry I left out the subject line....
Hi all,
Using RH 6.2 and samba-2.2.0 the functions close and
read were passed the struct files_struct which had
fsp_name set to the path and file name in question.
After upgrading to RH7.1 and samba-2.2.1a this is
set to NULL in both functions.
Is this a RH problem ?
or a samba-2.2.1a problem ?
if so, is it feature or a bug ?
Thanks all,

The program I an referring to is called PrintFile or some such, by Peter
Lerup.
There maybe some other spooler program required, but, if it works like I
think it might, this might be a real solution to linux print driver
problems, ie, let windows do the filtering.

I'm having trouble understanding WINS.
Here's what I'm /trying/ to do. I have a VPN (Cisco 5001). I want to
make it easy for remote users to map to shares - e.g.
\\someplace\somewhere. So far, this works if I use IP addresses, but not
if I use names.
I thought WINS was the solution to this problem, but I haven't quite
figured out how to make it work yet.
In my smb.conf (Samba 2.2.1a) I have:
wins support = yes
dns proxy = no
name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast
I have dns proxy turned off, because the IP it returns is not necessarily
the one I want (we've got some aliasing going on). I'd /like/ to
maintain
a single lmhosts file on the server. So when someone does a name lookup
it works like:
WINS client <-> WINS server <-> lmhosts file
So I have an lmhosts file on my Samba server like:
1.2.3.4 ANAME
1.2.3.5 BNAME
1.2.3.6 ETC
But when I do:
nmblookup -U sambaserver -R ANAME
I get:
querying ANAME on 127.0.0.1
name_query failed to find name ANAME
When I look at samba's var/locks/wins.dat file, I see that it includes
names for the local server, and for any WINS clients I've pointed at it.
My lmhosts data is not present. Should it be? Could it be?
Obviously, I'm not understanding something here.

Hello everybody,
I have a strange problem here. This is an excerpt from my smb.conf file:
[global]
workgroup = MPI-CBG
netbios name = Fileserver
wins server = xx.x.x.xx
security = share
log level = 0
[em]
path = /data/projects/electronmicroscopy/electronmicroscopy
browsable = yes
writeable = yes
So, when I try to connect to em with a specific user it doesn't work. The
user owns that directory and the permissions are 777. It is basically works
as a temporary storage place for microscope data.
Anyway, if I bump up the "log level = 3" then the user suddenly can
connect.
I have attached an excerpt from the logfile.
The machine I am trying to connect from is a Windows NT 4 and I have applied
the clear text password registry patch.
And ofcourse, it used to work before ;-).
Could you please CC me if you answer.
Thanks,

Subject: User's UID Becomes "root"
Hi,
My Samba (2.0.7) server (Solaris 7, 64-bit mode) with AFS option has
been running for few months. It happened recently that , from the system
process status report, some of my users' UIDs became "root"
instead of their
actual UID after they logged to the Server (see below):
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
root 292 1 0 18:18:10 ? 0:00 /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
djclark 7125 292 0 07:45:47 ? 0:04 /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
gaylord 8112 292 0 09:45:31 ? 0:03 /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
root 7247 292 0 08:00:54 ? 0:00 /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
amunoz 9055 292 0 11:34:59 ? 0:00 /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
