Smbclient still works perfectly... Anyone can give me a light?
PS: getent group or passwd shows only the users of the linux box (from

Subject: Winbind and Smbstatus
Hi all,
I am trying to setup samba with winbind so I can use our existing nt domain
architecture. I am trying this using the latest cvs from samba_2_2 (today)
on a rh 7.1 box.
My problem is I can't connect to a share from any windows client as it asks
for username and password (the share is set to public = no). Smbstatus shows
user nobody is trying to connect.
Now the strange thing: smbclient works perfectly. I set up a share on my
computer with access only to my domain user. Doing a 'smbclient //mypc/share
-U mydomainuser' works perfectly.
I don't know what could possibly be wrong, but I guess that's something
to
do with PAM.
I configured samba with the options --with-pam --with-smbmount
--with-acl-support --with-winbind --with-quotas
I set up /etc/pam.d/passwd as follows:
auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so use_first_pass shadow
nullok
account required /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
And /etc/pam.d/samba as follows:
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so nullok shadow
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
Do I need to change/add anything in these /etc/pam.d/* files?
Cheers
Gustavo

I'm not sure, but swat is not a daemon that can be started an remain
resident from init.d scripts, it only works from an inet daemon, that
detects an incoming conection and calls the swat program, then swat
writes the resulting web page and end execution. Check swat man page for
installation help

Brandon - Let me know if you get an answer to your question. I'm having the
same problem (along with not being able to use "smbpasswd" to add a
user). I
use the /etc/inetd.conf file to start the Samba daemons (Solaris 2.7) but I
continue to get the same type of error message when I try to connect via
Netscape. I checked to see if maybe the Netscape preferences were set up for
the proxy incorrectly but it appears to be fine - I have it set up to use
"Automatic proxy configuration".
So right now, I am having to deal with 2 issues that have kept me from
moving forward with setting up Samba......I may have to put a call into Sun
to see if they can help.
Good Luck :o)

Subject: Host Allow and Host Deny Denying Swat
Hi Everyone,
First let me tell you how dumb I feel. I configured host allow to
who knows hells what, and host deny to all. So all my local machines do not
have access to the samba server (didn't matter still trying to make it a
PDC). So when I went to swat today from localhost it says host denyed check
blah, so i went to the servers ip 192.168.1.100 and it says the same thing.
So I opened up text editor and attempted to edit my smb.conf to which i
added host allow = ALL and host deny = none, I saved the file, and killed
and restarted smbd and nmbd. Tryed to access swat again but was still
rejected. I checked the etc, host allow and deny and there was nothing in
them. And I started my smb.conf with swat which i think plays a part. How do
I correct this stupid mistake?
Thanks,
Brandon Caudle

...hallo, but what is the status of the art of winbind? It will be updated
and supported in the future?
I'd like to built a central linux serverfor a win2k/linux network, sharing
users, homes and desktops. I wonder if windbind is for me.
I really don't understand if winbind may use only my own linux-samba server
or if it needs a separate NT server to query.
Tnx, Marco
Is there any other solution all around; what did you?

Hi Karthick,
The following comes from the using samba book which is
distributed with the 2.2.1a Samba release. I followed these
instructions and was successful.
file:/usrlocal/samba/swat/using_samba/ch07_02.html
7.2.2 System V printers
Sending print jobs from a System V Unix system is a little easier. Here,
you need to get obtain the smbprint.sysv script in the
/usr/local/samba/examples/printing directory and do the following:
1.Change the server, service, and password parameters in the script to
match the NetBIOS machine, its shared printer service, and its
password, respectively. For example, the following entries would be
correct for the service in the previous example:
server = phoenix
service = CANON
password = ""
2.Run the following commands, which create a reference for the printer in
the printer capabilities file. Note that the new Unix printer entry
canon_printer is named:
# lpadmin -p canon_printer -v /dev/null -i ./smbprint.sysv
# enable canon_printer
# accept canon_printer
After you've done that, restart the Samba daemons and try printing to
it
using any standard Unix program. You should now be able to send data to
a printer on a Windows client across the network.

Just to test it out, you can first run
testparm from the bin directory to syntax check
your lib/smb.conf file. Once you like what
testparm has to say, you can log in as root
and run:
nmbd -D
smbd -D
This will start both servers. Making the servers
start as needed can easily be done from inetd.
When you use inetd, you have the advantage that inetd
takes care of restarts if the smbd crashes for some reason
and also you don't have the process running unless it needs
to be.

Hi,
I can't really tell you about status and support. So far, I am not having
any problems with it. The difference using winbind is that it will ask the
pdc for user authentication, instead of you having to create local users in
the unix database and samba database.
Cheers
Gustavo

...hallo, but what is the status of the art of winbind? It will be updated
and supported in the future?
I'd like to built a central linux serverfor a win2k/linux network, sharing
users, homes and desktops. I wonder if windbind is for me.
I really don't understand if winbind may use only my own linux-samba server
or if it needs a separate NT server to query.
Tnx, Marco
Is there any other solution all around; what did you?

Hi,
Yes, I can only do name lookups using broadcast. Wins is not working at all,
although I compiled libnss_wins.so and put a wins entry in the hosts part of
nsswitch.conf.
Any nmblookup I try to do only searches the local subnet, using bcast also.
Any ideas?
Cheers

I think you're on to something. It appears WINS lookups may be broken. The
PDC doesn't exist on my local subnet, so I have to do a wins lookup. When I
issue an nmblookup, it comes back with info that it's doing a broadcast,
instead of a wins lookup.

I was playing around with the debug levels, smb.conf and stuff. The
following entry in smb.conf was the problem:
name resolve order = lmhosts hosts wins bcast
After I changed it to:
Name resolve order = bcast
Winbind started working. Now I only changed it to = lmhosts bcast and it is
still working. Wbinfo returns all info I need (despite I get a few
getgrent(): out of memory in log.winbindd - is this normal?).
I can't tell why, but hosts or wins weren't succesful. Are there any
problems if I just let it with bcast?
Cheers
