Some days before I asked about a recommended linux environment for R. Looks like, in principle it runs on all major linux distributions (debian red hat, suse). There was a report of a problem with dynamically loading Fortran on Red Hat 6.2. Someone encountered trouble compiling library mclust with f77 and succeded with f2c, but other people have succeeded compiling mclust with f77, so there is no clear reason to prefer either f77 or f2c.
