I have Samba running as a PDC and it works perfectly, until that is, a Win 2000 user authenticated by the PDC and with a profile on the Samba server wants to access Word and then after a minute or so Word crashes, I got the same result with a Redhat PDC and also with an SME server distro. Informed suggestions other than dump Word are very welcome... John Russell Digital Media Lab University of Sussex

We experienced this with some Word docs that contained embedded VB macros. The problem went away and we never found the cause. The problem only occurs with Word, other Office apps are OK. I'm using SME Server V5 (formerly e-Smith and based on RH 7.1) as a PDC and file/print server and it runs well otherwise, but Word just quits. I've tried moving templates etc the problem occured with a totally different Samba PDC on RH7.3 so I think it must be a Word thing? Trouble is I want to put in place what will be the first Linux solution in the postgrads lab (all M$) so its gotta work! ----- Original Message ----- From: <jra@dp.samba.org> To: "John Russell" <j.c.russell@sussex.ac.uk> Cc: "samba@lists samba.org" <samba@lists.samba.org> Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 3:14 PM Subject: Re: [Samba] Samba PDC and Word> On Sat, Aug 10, 2002 at 03:47:03PM +0100, John Russell wrote: > > I have Samba running as a PDC and it works perfectly, until that is, aWin> > 2000 user authenticated by the PDC and with a profile on the Sambaserver> > wants to access Word and then after a minute or so Word crashes, I gotthe> > same result with a Redhat PDC and also with an SME server distro.Informed> > suggestions other than dump Word are very welcome... > > Is the file word is accessing on the Samba server ? > > Jeremy.-- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
They may have been, I'm not completely certain as I wasn't the one creating the Word files. Try opening the Word doc without enabling macros. On Word 2000, select TOOLS -> MACRO -> SECURITY This will give you a window with 3 choices of "security" with macros. Select MEDIUM so you will be prompted to run macros. Then open the suspect document and select the choice (I don't recall exactly what it says) to not enable macros when you open this document this time. See how the document performs. It may not work completely right as the macro function won't work, but you should be able to do simple edits and save them. I'd be very curious to see if you can isolate this cause. Like I mentioned earlier the problem mysteriously went away without my intervention. :) Thanks, Mike> ---------- > From: Manuel Arenaz[SMTP:arenaz@udc.es] > Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 12:52 AM > To: Mike Kerns > Cc: samba@lists.samba.org; apca72@dsl.pipex.com; jra@dp.samba.org > Subject: Re: [Samba] Samba PDC and Word > > On Mon, 2002-08-12 at 21:52, Mike Kerns wrote: > > We experienced this with some Word docs that contained embedded VB > > macros.
