Truncated plots
Hello As a postgrad I have been helping an undergraduate student with R coding but she has a problem with R studio on her laptop which I can't fix - basically when she runs a plot it appears without a y axis label with the black line plot frame hard against the plot window and the bottom of the plot, where you wou...

truncated poisson in glm / glmmPQL
Hi I'm a postgrad in ecology, and have recently started to use R. I'm planning to model various sets of animal abundance (i.e. count) data in relation to habitat data using glm's and/or glmmPQL's. However, some of my potential response variables have many zeros. From what I gather the "family = ....

[OT]Example Data for Non-statisticians
(Sorry for the slightly off topic post) I'm giving a talk (on data mining) to some non-statisticians (who're all postgrad students, but a mixture of Science and Commerce majors). My intention is to show them the importance of statistics when doing data mining. What I'm thinking of doing is using, hopefully, two datasets. One from scientific area and another that is commercially-related. However, it would be ni...

ANOVA-like tests of geometrically-distributed data
I have a statistical problem which has given me no end of grief recently, and am posting here in the hope that somebody can give me a straight answer. I'm a IT postgrad, not a statistician, so people may have to speak really slowly and clearly for me to get it :) I am collecting simulation data, and the results are geometrically distributed (or approximately so). From what I can gather from my stats books, provided the sample size is large enough (>30 or s...

Samba PDC and Word
I have Samba running as a PDC and it works perfectly, until that is, a Win 2000 user authenticated by the PDC and with a profile on the Samba server wants to access Word and then after a minute or so Word crashes, I got the same result with a Redhat PDC and also with an SME server distro. Informed suggestions other than dump Word are very welcome... John Russell Digital Media Lab University of

sem: negative parameter variances
...igma13: I'm not sure what it means... As you can see, maximum is occurred at a negative value for sigma13. At the same time one can check for rank condition - if I'm not mistaken, all three equations are exact. After that, I estimate another specification, for example, including 'ln.postgrad.students.pc.be' (post-graduate students) instead of 't12' (dummy for poor and depressed regions), so that these two specifications differ only in one exogenous variable. I proceed in the same manner as before (including 'ln.postgrad.students.pc.be' instead of 't12' in s...

deleting variables
How can I automatically exclude one variable from being saved in the workspace when I quit an R session? The problem is I don't know how to erase a variable once it has been created. Background: I open a connection called "con" to a database server in my ~/.Rprofile. Obviously, the connection expires when quitting the R session. Unfortunately, the workspace is loaded after

hypergeometric
Hi, I hope somebody can help me on how to use the hypergeometric function. I did read through the R documentation on hypergeometric but not really sure what it means. I would like to evaluate the hypergeometric function as follows: F((2*alpha+1)/2, (2*alpha+2)/2 , alpha+1/2, betasq/etasq). I'm not sure which function should be used- either phyper or qhyper or dhyper Where

rpart confidence intervals?
hi, I am using rpart with a continuous response variable. Is there a way to extract 95% confidence intervals for the predicted mean at each node? cheers. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/rpart-confidence-intervals--tp18601587p18601587.html Sent from the R help mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

variable as part of file name
Dear all, sorry for this very basic question, but I did not find any good example yet. I would like to set up a variable that can be recall later to substitute a part of a file name. As example: var_filename = as.name("aaa") jpeg("var_filename.jpg") plot() dev.off() It would be very useful in order to avoid to change manually many strings. I guess it is possible, but I did

Trying to recover erased logs
Hi, I''ve had several people ask me about a comment I made in a previous post; <quote> Dan, firstly, if you haven''t touched the compromised system much, do a "dd" across the raw disk and grep it for log fragments. I have seen vital erased logs recovered this way before! </quote> I shall try and explain a bit more! If an attacker erases, or truncates a
