[Xen-users] Is HP server hardware incompatible with Xen?
Hi, We''ve been using xen with pc clones for some time now. But now the boss wants to get serious and start using real servers. We''ve been looking at HP. I got in touch with a couple of distributors for prices and much to my suprise, I''ve been told by one HP Partner that Xen does not run on HP hardware. (a ProLiant ML 150) He continued to tell me that he could offer me a special deal installing vmware. This feels like FUD. I would like to know your opinions/experiences. Thanks. Chris. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Re: [Xen-users] Is HP server hardware incompatible with Xen?
Chris, I have Xen running on an HP DL 145 G2 just fine. The only issue is that I cannot use the LOM serial console due to what Xen does with serial ports. Otherwise, no issues. Hi,> I have Xen running on an HP DL 145 G2 just fine.I need a stand alone chasis. :( I''ve read this http://hcl.xensource.com/?showall=no&subtab=systems Does anyone know if it is up to date? Re: [Xen-users] Is HP server hardware incompatible with Xen?
Why would a machine that can run linux, not run Xen? (Unless you are looking for Hardware Virtualization that is.) I''m sure there are some exceptions. It''s also depending a lot on what you mean by "compatible" (or "incompatible"). Does compatible mean that "there are no reason why it wouldn''t run, but no-one has tested it" or "It''s been tested by a verifiable source". The latter case is what''s listed on the link given by Chris. That doesn''t mean that OTHER systems won''t run Xen without problems. That some machine ISN''T listed doesn''t mean that it''s not compatible by the former meaning (although it is POSSIBLE that it''s not listed because it failed - most companies don''t want to get in trouble by listing "non-working" solutions in a "name and shame" fashion!). Just that it''s not compatible by the latter meaning... I''m pretty sure that the list given is simply based on what has been submitted to XenSource for testing, or that has been tested specifically by the manufacturer. Note also that XenEnterprise 3.1 (which is based on a Xen 3.0.x hypervisor) has been tested on the previously mentioned DL145 machine, so I don''t see any reason why the open-source version shouldn''t run on this machine, regardless of what HP claims. -- Mats> > On Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 12:53:34PM +0200, Chris Fanning wrote: > > Hi, > > > > >I have Xen running on an HP DL 145 G2 just fine. > > I need a stand alone chasis. :( > > > > I''ve read this > > http://hcl.xensource.com/?showall=no&subtab=systems > > > > Does anyone know if it is up to date? > > > > Is it really such a task to find xen compatible machines? > > > > Thanks again. > > Chris. > > > > On 6/19/07, Matt Okeson-Harlow <matt@technomage.net> wrote: > > >Chris, > > > > > >I have Xen running on an HP DL 145 G2 just fine. > > > > > >The only issue is that I cannot use the LOM serial console > due to what Xen > > >does with serial ports. > > > > > >Otherwise, no issues. > > > > > >On Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 11:47:20AM +0200, Chris Fanning wrote: > > >> Hi, > > >> > > >> We''ve been using xen with pc clones for some time now. > > >> But now the boss wants to get serious and start using > real servers. > > >> We''ve been looking at HP. > > >> > > >> I got in touch with a couple of distributors for prices > and much to my > > >> suprise, I''ve been told by one HP Partner that Xen does > not run on HP > > >> hardware. It supports RedHat and SuSE Linux versions, so that''s saying to me that it should work fine with Xen. It is VERY rare that a machine that can run Linux can''t run Xen - it does happen, but I wouldn''t think it''s likely in this case [it''s usually on some pretty crappy motherboards that have poor BIOS support for Linux-only BIOS calls]. I''d say there''s 99% chance that this machine is fine. -- Mats> > Thanks. > Chris. > > > -- > > Mats > > > > > > On Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 12:53:34PM +0200, Chris Fanning wrote: > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > >I have Xen running on an HP DL 145 G2 just fine. > > > > I need a stand alone chasis. :( > > > > > > > > I''ve read this > > > > http://hcl.xensource.com/?showall=no&subtab=systems > > > > > > > > Does anyone know if it is up to date? > > > > > > > > Is it really such a task to find xen compatible machines? > > > > > > > > Thanks again. > > > > Chris. > > > > > > > > On 6/19/07, Matt Okeson-Harlow <matt@technomage.net> wrote: > > > > >Chris, > > > > > > > > > >I have Xen running on an HP DL 145 G2 just fine. > > > > > > > > > >The only issue is that I cannot use the LOM serial console > > > due to what Xen > > > > >does with serial ports. > > > > > > > > > >Otherwise, no issues. > > > > > > > > > >On Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 11:47:20AM +0200, Chris Fanning wrote: > > > > >> Hi, > > > > >> > > > > >> We''ve been using xen with pc clones for some time now. > > > > >> But now the boss wants to get serious and start using > > > real servers. > > > > >> We''ve been looking at HP. > > > > >> > > > > >> I got in touch with a couple of distributors for prices > > > and much to my > > > > >> suprise, I''ve been told by one HP Partner that Xen does > > > not run on HP > > > > >> hardware. hi, Considering my (very) recent experience (HP nx9420 notebook) I''d double check that every HW feature is actually available ! I mean, the said laptop (and others) was once sold with VT disabled and some had to wait for months before HP had released a BIOS update allowing to activate this feature... fair isn''t it ? So, as too often in the field, there''s what''s advertised by fashioned marketing... and what Joe User has to face once he opens the brown box!
