wine users - Oct 2010 - Wine with IE8

Hi

I tried running ie8 with wine and i discovered this: 

1. No shortcut or reference link in the wine folder
2. IE8 froze after i tried to start it. Also when trying to change the url
to google.com ...... 

I however CAN run ie 7 on playonlinux but it wont download files
or everything i download with it gets auto deleted.......

So how can i make wine run ie8 properly is there some kind of 
fix or patch or download for this ?

Only thing that ever froze for me in wine was this ie8

PlayOnLinux isn't supported here. This forum is for plain Wine.

Using real IE as a browser is not recommended. The main reason to install IE in
Wine is for an app that needs its native dlls, and for those IE6 usually works
best.

Start with a CLEAN Wineprefix and then attempt to install IE8 using winetricks. 
No additional dlls, no PlayOnLinux.

If it still does not work, look for an existing bug report in Bugzilla.  If
there is no bug report, file one, however, there should be one for IE8 if memory
serves me.  There are issues with using it if you install directly from
Microsoft.

BTW, why are you trying to install this program?  IE6 (which is now deprecated)
or IE7 might be a better bet to work with Wine if you need/require IE type web
functionality.  Also FireFox can be installed on Wine to give that level of web
functionality.  Lastly, the Gecko engine can be installed and that gives basic
web functionality, which is improving.
