ok as everyone knows, (and to be frank i didnt think it would in my lifetime ;P) fallout 3 gets released in 3 days or 6 for those who live in europe. now for those who where playing games since the 3rd grade the fallout universe has a special place in their hearts since literally i grew with it! so in mho fallout 3 fells in the category of games that someone must simply have, and thats why im anxious if wine can handle it. I'll be very disappointed if it cant (not because you need windows to play games - thats why i have my lappy) because i wont be able to bind together two things i love most atm - linux and fallout 3. since oblivion runs, chances are pretty high that fallout 3 will run too. i'd love to hear other ppl opinions about this!
I hope it would run But what kind of protection is involved ? I've noticed that main difference between recent running game and not running game is the protection. For exemple starforce no-dvd cause lot of wine issues But there are so many reason for a game not to run... Let's hope
I went out today and bought a copy. It seems to install fine enough, but then when I go to play it, my computer just sits and stares blankly back at me. I was surprised by this, because I had assumed that since Oblivion works so spot-on with Wine, I almost felt certain that F3 would, as well. In any case, I am keeping my fingers crossed that a solution presents itself (either to me or to any poster /user out there) so that I can avoid having to create a dual boot just to be able to play the newest addition in one of the greatest series ever. Fingers crossed!
try a 1.0 wine and a 1.1 wine there are differences which can make a difference... go figure. Dean dayosh wrote:> I went out today and bought a copy. Thanks, big D! I'm currently running 1.0, and making a few tweaks, but as soon as I'm done with the experimentation (assuming things still go awry), I'll switch over to the newer version and try that. :)
Thanks, John. That fixed part of it, now we're looking at the following: Code: $ wine "Fallout3.exe" err:module:import_dll Loading library xlive.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\Bethesda Softworks\\Fallout 3\\Fallout3.exe") failed (error c000007b). err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\Bethesda Softworks\\Fallout 3\\Fallout3.exe" failed, status c0000135 Would this require another additional wine tricks add-on?

Someone else will have to help on that one. John

It needs Xp Sp2 or vista to run and a windows live ID. As it is from Microsoft it might use a lot of undocumented functions that Wine does not possess. But it might also work, you will have to try on this one.
Well, I wonder if I may have accidentally deleted something I needed and just don't realize it...I did the last post, and now I'm getting the following: Code: $ wine "FalloutLauncher.exe" fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.VC80.CRT" err:module:attach_process_dlls "MSVCR80.dll" failed to initialize, aborting err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\Bethesda Softworks\\Fallout 3\\FalloutLauncher.exe" failed, status c0000142 Anyone have any ideas?

I will install it, and then try to run it again, and it gives me the same error... Any ideas on how to fix that?
dayosh wrote:> Anyone have any ideas? Also, by "fresh wine," do you mean fresh install, or just fresh window? Apologies for my n00b-dom.By "fresh wine" he meant with an empty wineprefix. To have an empty wineprefix, you can : - remove the ~/.wine folder (It will erase everything installed in wine) - rename the ~/.wine folder (Like the previous one, but you can put it back by changing the name back) - using wineprefix (See here : http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-f2f5f3bc795247f11962ea613a1f9e15657ad552 but you will need the WINEPREFIX="something" every time you want to use wine or winetricks to access this installation) Each time we install something in wine (as an exe, through winetricks, ...), it sometimes install services and dlls making wine unstable and by restarting from 0, you are sure to be in the most stable environment wine can provide you. So, prepare a "fresh" wine, install vcrun2005, install the msi file and then install fallout.
Aye, I do have the CD/DVD version. I'll try looking at that, and see if anything pops up. Thanks for the heads-up, Stim! :)
when I press down on the keyboard it lets me select stuff.
Not I...only running a full Ubuntu partition, here. Used to run a dual-boot, but that ended after some malware in Windoze forced me to re-install and lose quite a bit of info.
My suggestions for getting as far as I can get: 1. rename ~/.wine/ to .wine_backup %this will let you start fresh 2. open winecfg and setup audio 3. Load dvd and install 4. download and place d3dx9_38.dll in windows/system folder 5. use a fix to remove the protection, unless I get the okay from a mod I wont be able to post a link. I would suggest searching google for "fallout 3 trivium" 6. Run the launcher through wine, it should open up and you can setup your video settings. If you can try to play the game through here, if you get a direct sound error then... 7. run Fallout3.exe through wine and it will start up. The mouse will be stuck but you can use the arrow keys to select start new game. Sadly it will freeze while loading.
fyi I never installed any xlive
Hello all, i hope some of you figures out a way to play fallout 3 in wine... Im waiting for a Oportunity to switch completely to linux since a long time but i promised myself to wait until i know that fallout 3 kinda runs on linux, so i hope that it will someday because Windows is starting to piss me off and atm i just have windows installed to play fallout 3. :D Greetings Tigger
Hrmm, cancel that. It seems the game auto-installs xlive when you install it. I tried copying the folder of Fallout 3 to a fresh wine installation, and it asked for xlive :)

VMware Workstation supports DirectX 9.But what i read, games dont work too good with windows and vmware. What i understand is it rather emulates a graphic card than uses your own, etc etc. Good for everything but gaming. Am I wrong?
OK I managed to run the game using patched wine 1.1.8, but then ahen i get to 'first steps area' and start moving my mouse, game crashes. If I just sit there or walk around the room using keyboard, game is fine. The second i start moving my mouse it crashes. Anyone know the sollution? thx
