Converting dollar value (factors) to numeric
Hi, I'm trying to read in a bunch of CSV files into R where many columns are coded like $111.11. When reading them in they are treated as factors. I'm wondering if there is an easy way to convert them into numeric in R (as I don't want to modify the source data)? I've done some searches and can't seem to find an easy way to do this. I apologise if this is a trivial

Equivalent of SAS's FIRST. And LAST. Variable in R?
Hi all, I'm just wondering if there is a equivalent of SAS's FIRST. and LAST. variables in R? For example, suppose this is a snapshot of the data: ClientCode CaseCode open close Important 1 37 28 2003-07-08 2003-09-02 1 2 37 310 2003-11-01 2004-09-10 1 3 37 1562 2007-04-03 2007-07-27 1 4

Merge Multiple Datasets
Hi, I've got a bunch of datasets (each has an "ID" column) that I'd like to merge into one big datasets. After a google search I found http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/05/08/11131.html . However, I'm wondering if there is an easy way to do this as I've got about 12 datasets to be merged (all in the same format: an "ID" column and a "Frequency"

R Report (was RE: R-help Digest, Vol 90, Issue 25)
I've been following the "R Reports" topic in the digest mode, so apologies if this has already been mentioned. On a Windows platform, there is a package called R2wd which I've recently discovered and have been using. It allows one to put data frames (it's the only object I've tried so far) into a very nicely Word formatted table. E.g in its documentation it has this

wdTable() in R2wd
Hi all, I've been using the wdTable() function from R2wd package and it's been working great. However I just tried to do the following: > table.2 Waste Rebate code Chargeable (fin_map) Quantity (qty) Total [1,] "Waste" "Rebate code" "CHG" "121" "$22,534.01" [2,]

List of tables rather than an extra dimension in the table or (l)apply(xtabs)
I'm not sure how to best explain what I am after but here goes. I have a data frame with 2 geographical factors. One is the major region the other is the component regions. I am trying to process all the regions at the same time without using "for". So I need (think, I do) a list of matrices each structured according to the number of subregions within each region. So is there a

Novell
Hi, I like to know if anyone has ever gotten samba to work on Sun Solaris on a Novell Network. I don't have an issue with installation on Sun Solaris that works fine. But I've never put Samba on a Novell Network Before. Please describe any steps or issue with this. Phillip B. Bruce, Manager > kpmg Consulting > Network Engineering & Integration >

Sync with MS WINS server
While reading various docs on Samba, there are notes that Samba can sync with other Samba WINS servers, but can not sync with a MS WINS server. Has anyone ever tried, and is there a reason why this doesn't work? ***************************************************************************** The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged. [LLVMdev] The source code Makefile (newbie with pass registering Problem)
Hi!! It's me again. I guess that there is a problem in the Makefile of my source code. But I don't know where. Could you please verify it? The Makefile is written like this: # Makefile for Genetic Algorithm Pass CXXFLAGS = -Wall -I/iss/fpga3/nicole/galib247/ LDFLAGS= -L/iss/fpga3/nicole/galib247/ga/ -lga -Wl,-E # Path to top level of LLVM heirarchy LEVEL=../../../ # Name of the

OT: (a) Biostar or MSI mainboard? (b) all Celeron CPU's OK?
(a) Mark (mhr) suggested I buy a bare bones box, when I reported the problem with the mainboard in this Dell Dimension 2400 box. Possibly I can have the mainboard repaired (and the PSU, if it is also having problems), and if so, I will give this one to my Stepson and go the bare bones box route and have a more powerful box for myself. I looked at two (2) very low end Desktop mainboards in the

Hmmm. RJ-45 on TDMx0B card?
Just wondering if there's any significance to the jacks on the TDM cards. They appear to be RJ-45 instead of RJ-11, and I wasn't quite sure if that's something that makes a difference from the user perspective. . . Thx. B.

buildpkg.sh scripts problem
Hello Ben Lindstrom, I tried your package creation scripts for Solaris which are contributed with the new OpenSSH Version 3.0.0p1. Nice that you develop these scripts but I run into a major problem installing the package which was created by the script. On our Solaris hosts /usr/local is only a symbolic link to /opt/local. After installing the OpenSSH package the symbolic link was removed and a

Ruby on Rails Presentation to Agile Atlanta Group tonight...
Hi everyone, We had a really successful meeting tonight in Atlanta. The topic was an introduction to Ruby on Rails and our attendance was 30 people, which is over double of what we normally get. (Our attendance has dropped since moving the venue about 25 miles north of the city. The majority of the group stayed well past two hours, at which point we took a break. The entire presentation and

(Linux) security hole
Hi all, Though this bug is an old one, it is still applicable to at least Red Hat 4.0 on Intel and ALPHA, and probably other distributions. It may even extend to other Unix implementations as well, although we have not tested them (at all or thoroughly). Create a user with user id 65536. When logging in as this user, running the id command will yield root (in other words, there are only 16 bits

Problem with smbpasswd
Hi all, I've just set up password encryption using 1.9.18p4. I compiled with NO ALLOW_CHANGE_PASSWORD option because compilation didn't work (I'm using HP-UX 10.20). Everything seems to be working correctly instead of a 'normal' user trying to change his (samba-) password using smbpasswd (root can change any password). The messages I receive are as follows: Old SMB password:

SQL "editor"
Hello all, I am curious about what tools you guys use to make your databases. I know David uses CocoaMySQL. Are there other tools for other platforms and for other databases? I''m not very good with the SQL language, so I would like being able to do all my database setup with an easy-to-use tool (defining tables, fields, primary keys, foreign keys, indexes, etc.) Big kisses, Vincent.
