I would really appreciate some help figuring out why one of my students has "disappeared" from the user list, and what to do about it. I'm using Samba3 on Fedora; the client machines are running WinXP. The system has been up and running since the beginning of September. Today one of my 4th-graders was unable to log on; she didn't read the error message carefully, so she couldn't tell me exactly what happened. (This student has logged on successfully many times before.) (The only change to the logs below is the students' names.) So I tried to change her password so I could test her logon: [root@zeus ~]# smbpasswd student1 New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Failed to find entry for user student1. Failed to modify password entry for user student1 I did not find her listed anymore in the linux users. I used pdbedit to check her entry: [root@zeus ~]# pdbedit -Lv student1 Unix username: student1 NT username: Account Flags: [U ] User SID: S-1-5-21-1185660-1660059191-2813172890-2076 Primary Group SID: S-1-5-21-1185660-1660059191-2813172890-2077 Full Name: Student One Home Directory: \\zeus\profdata\student1 HomeDir Drive: Logon Script: Profile Path: \\zeus\profiles\student1 Domain: HELLAS Account desc: Workstations: Munged dial: Logon time: 0 Logoff time: Mon, 18 Jan 2038 19:14:07 GMT Kickoff time: Mon, 18 Jan 2038 19:14:07 GMT Password last set: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 09:53:32 GMT Password can change: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 09:53:32 GMT Password must change: Mon, 18 Jan 2038 19:14:07 GMT Last bad password : 0 Bad password count : 0 Logon hours : FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ...and compared it with the entry for a student who successfully logged in about the same time: [root@zeus ~]# pdbedit -Lv student2 Unix username: student2 NT username: Account Flags: [U ] User SID: S-1-5-21-1185660-1660059191-2813172890-2098 Primary Group SID: S-1-5-21-1185660-1660059191-2813172890-2099 Full Name: Student Two Home Directory: \\zeus\profdata\student2 HomeDir Drive: Logon Script: Profile Path: \\zeus\profiles\student2 Domain: HELLAS Account desc: Workstations: Munged dial: Logon time: 0 Logoff time: Mon, 18 Jan 2038 19:14:07 GMT Kickoff time: 0 Password last set: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 09:44:51 GMT Password can change: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 09:44:51 GMT Password must change: Mon, 18 Jan 2038 19:14:07 GMT Last bad password : 0 Bad password count : 0 Logon hours : FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF I noticed that the unsuccessful student had a "kickoff time" entry (with a peculiar date, same as the "Password must change" date), but the successful student had only a "0" in the "kickoff time" field. The log file for the machine she attempted to log onto contained these entries for the time she tried to log in: [2005/10/28 10:52:31, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(642) hephaistos (192.168.1.52) connect to service profiles initially as user student1 (uid=538, gid=538) (pid 30601) [2005/10/28 10:53:18, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(430) write_socket_data: write failure.
