"disappeared" user
...read the error message carefully, so she couldn't tell me exactly what happened. (This student has logged on successfully many times before.) (The only change to the logs below is the students' names.) So I tried to change her password so I could test her logon: [root@zeus ~]# smbpasswd student1 New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Failed to find entry for user student1. Failed to modify password entry for user student1 I did not find her listed anymore in the linux users. I used pdbedit to check her entry: [root@zeus ~]# pdbedit -Lv student1 Unix username: student1 NT user...

symmetric (& square) contingency table from dataset of unordered pairs
Hi Everybody, I have a data set in which each observation has a pair of students, with each kid id'd by a 4 digit number: > head(PAIRS) student1 student2 2 2213 2200 4 2198 2195 5 2199 2191 6 2229 2221 7 2247 2249 8 2250 2263 There is no significance to student1 vs. student2: they are just a pair, and the "variable" names could be flipped without loss of meaning. I want a symmetri...

user's smbd process generates high cpu utilization
...roblem in resources, we recently upgraded the server from a generally underworked pIII 500/ 1 gig ram /ultra 2 scsi disks to a 2.4 gHz/2 gig server with U320 disks. Problem still comes up. I conclude the box is at least adequate. Hell, the previous one was plenty adequate. Some details: [root@student1 sbin]# rpm -q samba samba-3.0.13-1 [root@student1 sbin]# rpm -q openldap openldap-2.2.13-2 [root@student1 sbin]# uname -a Linux server.redacted.edu 2.6.10-1.770_FC3smp #1 SMP Thu Feb 24 14:20:06 EST 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux top - 11:05:39 up 2 days, 22:57, 3 users, load average: 0.08, 0.06...

group and user permissions issue.
.... My issue is witb samba not following the permissons I have set on files in a shared directory. Purpose: set up a directory for students and teachers where students can leave files and only edit their own files, teachers can edit all files. unix permissions for files are like this -rwxrw---- 1 student1 teachers 6 Jun 22 18:22 S1.txt* -rwxrw---- 1 student3 teachers 17 Jun 22 18:21 S3.txt* -rwxrw---- 1 student3 teachers 8 Jun 22 18:21 student3.txt* therefore students can edit their own files and teachers in the group teachers can also edit the files. I create a share in...

Is there a function to interdigitate two columns?
...a large data collection tasks between two students, and I have a master list of samples, but one student records some of the values, and the other student the remainder, I need to get the two sets of student measurements into one column. Here?s an example: samp <- LETTERS[1:10] # sample names student1 <- c(NA, NA, 22, 34.3, NA, 10.5, 19.7, 20.22, NA, 12.9) student2 <- c(25.5,29.4, NA, NA, 13.6, NA, NA, NA, 17.0, NA) merged <- c(25.5,29.4, 22, 34.3, 13.6, 10.5, 19.7, 20.22, 17.0, 12.9) df1 <- data.frame(samp, student1) df2 <- data.frame(samp, student2) merge(df1, df2) # these don...

different logon path for different users - local profiles for a few users only - how?
I would like to have roaming profiles for one group of users (student1, student2), and local profiles for another group of users (Joe, Mary). Is it possible with Samba? From what I've tested, one can use either roaming profiles with a setting similar to the one below: logon path = \\%L\profiles\%G\%U Or local profiles, using the logon path empty: logon pa...

smb.conf for around 2500 users
Samba4 with Linux and Windows clients wanting to get the same home folder data. Hi A college has students arranged with Linux home directories according to which year they belong to and which class within that year, a or b or whatever, they belong to e.g.: /home2/students/year7/year7a/student1 /home2/students/year7/year7a/student2 ... ... /home2/students/year13/year13a/student2500 To get at the same data on windows, I was thinking of a share for each of the classes e.g. [year7a] path = /home2/students/year7/year7a read only = No browsable = No ... ... [year13a] path = /home2/students/y...

Sharing of Directories & assigning group permissions to directories
...mberships. For example: 1. I wanted to create in /home a group of directories with group members Admin Directory Member Users - Rector, Principal, Treasurer, Deputy Principal and so on. Teachers Directory Member Users - Teacher1, Teacher2, Teacher3 and so on. Students Directory Member Users - Student1, Student2, Student3, and so on. 2. Whenever a user tries to log on to the samba box using windows clients 98,2000,XP and uses the network neighborhood, the authenticated user can then see ALL THREE DIRECTORIES ICON but cannot open the directory for which they don't belong. I guess if for the...
