samba - Sep 2005 - Samba Solaris HIGH Cpu

We're running samba 3.20 ( pretty default install ) on solaris.  During the
day 99.9% of the time the load avg. on the server is just fine, however at times
all the smbd processes go into a "run" state and put load avg. on the
server to over 300.  This only lasts for a couple of minutes and then goes away.
The smbd  process count is normally around 400-600 all day.  So Its not like an
all of a sudden excessive load.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Can you attach to an smbd process in that state and get a gdb backtrace
or a "truss" output ? Remember to build with -g to get symbols.
