Hi. Occasionally a problem crops up with "File already in use by another user" when it isn't !! This is usually a Lotus organiser data file which is on the RH8/Samba 2.2.7 server. I can't find a way of clearing this "Lock" except by rebooting the server... there must be a better way, any ideas ? Thanks Mike --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Could this be an oplocks problem? Joel On Fri, Feb 07, 2003 at 12:36:40PM -0000, Mike Stewart wrote:> Hi. Occasionally a problem crops up with "File already in use by another user" when it isn't !! > Could this be an oplocks problem? > JoelI fear it's not an oplocks problem... I'm experiencing the very same problem on a Mandrake 9 box running Samba 2.2.7, and in my case the affected files are normal MS Office documents. Please have a look to my previous message "Self-locking files?", roughly one month ago, in the mailing list for details. As suggested [by Joel, btw], I set the oplocks to disabled in the samba cfg file (even 2nd level oplocks) but to no avail. It still happens, randomly. I'd say a few times a day, with an average of 10 samba users. I don't dare to upgrade to Samba 2.2.7A or newer because, apart from that symptom, my samba box is doing a great job, and I don't want to take a risk. Corrado
> i'ts not always samba. espacially office uses a lot of TSR programms, > which will unlock the files extremly late...it's possible... the problem in my case surfaces when the user opens a file, and it gets opened as a "read-only" file. Or (I mean XOR :-) when trying to save, and the file appears to be allocated by another user, which is not the case in reality. Thus I'm possibly facing TWO different problems: 1) files being opened as "read-only" (but their attrib are *not* read-only) 2) files supposedly already locked when a user tries to save them. [I did verify that nobody else previously opened a "case-2" file, at least in the same workday, otherwise we're probably back to case 1] Case (2) is a good candidate for your hypotesis, but case (1) seems to be different. [of course, nobody else previously opened a "case-2" file, otherwise we're back to case (1)] Unfortunately couldn't find a reasonable explanation and/or solution for the problem, but fortunately it's not a huge problem, just a nuisance. Thanks, Corrado
Just free associating here, but: When you say reboot the server, do you mean: 1. Restarting samba? or 2. Rebooting the computer? Thanks for fessin' up. You might want to give more details so others could learn from your mistake. For example, I have never heard of "Netwatcher."
