samba - Jan 2003 - Known error - missing user directories

I know this is a well known problem but I would dearly love to know what 
causes it.  I mess with the ldap (I'm using an ldap backend) settings 
and I wind up without any user directories.

Anybody?

Could the be the Windows client removing files from a profile directory?
Do you store user profiles in home directories?
