Hi guys, I'm been following samba for six or seven odd months now in preparation for moving our organisation over to a file server which is a little more cost effective than the Micro$oft alternative. We are currently running with about 30 users on a Windows 2000 Small Business Server. Do you see any problems in replacing this server with a linux box running Samba? Is the file system/server as stable as Microsoft or Novell? I see some quite big players moving this way and would like to get the opinions of those that perhaps have made this move before we decide to go any further. Regards, Bill William. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

We still have an NT server around for some propietary applications, but even without much load the NT box isn't nearly as stable as the samba server.> I see some quite big players moving this way and would like to get the > opinions of those that perhaps have made this move before we decide to go > any further.I don't know where you start counting big players, but I'm sure even bigger shops use samba. Oh, we also do print services with samba, it's less hassle that way :) Cheers, Kai -- Kai Blin Linux system administrator Tel: Ring-86592 Allgemeine Chirurgie Universitaetsklinikum Tuebingen "I'd love to go out with you, but it's my parakeet's bowling night."
Hi Bill, Ask a Microsoft person and they'll probably tell you the stability of the two systems are the same. Ask a Unix/Linux person with windoze experience (ie me) and they'll tell you not to ask such silly questions! ;-) It's far more stable than Windoze. It may require a little effort at first but it's worth it in the end. Cheers, Mark. -----Original Message----- From: Bill William [mailto:bill6756@hotmail.com] Sent: 13 August 2002 12:06 To: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: [Samba] Samba for a Corporate File Server? We had some initial problems at first, not with Samba, but with the version of the XFS filesystem included with Debian 3.0 (I've filed a bug with them over this). Using XFS 1.1 from sgi fixed our problems. We've now been up over 65 days without a reboot (and that was for power maintenance). We've been running Samba here for almost 3 years, and it's been *very* reliable. Good luck! Ken McCord MIS Manager A.C. Coin and Slot

So I can't really tell you the solution..
