Did you try running the mandrake tools, such as Mandrake Control
Center->System->Services? You actually get asked at the end of
installation (at least in expert mode).

Actually:
# service smb start
(will start both smbd and nmbd)

Btw, your next step should be:
# smbpasswd -a <username>
for all the users who are going to access the Mandrake box from windows.
This assumes that a unix account of the same name exists, and also that
this name corresponds with the name the user logs into Windows with.
Please take a look at /etc/samba/smb.conf before you go and stuff up a
pretty good default file with SWAT.
