For several reasons (security, resources, and simplicity) is there a project underway to make Samba run without TCP/IP. The FAQ says that there is a desire to make this project work, and that it is stalled. I for one would like to hear from anyone working on this before I dive headlong myself into trying to get Samba to work without TCP/IP. --john

NO, NOT TCP/IP! seriously, there is someone working on porting samba's NetBIOS layer to NETBEUI. PLEASE, no. not again: i don't want to hear any more about NETBEUI being NetBIOS. luke
Is it possible to access a samba server without using tcp/ip? For example typing 'net use drive: \\server\volume' while in msdos (not windows). I guess it would use netbios on the same subnet without tcp. Joe
Hi Joe, No, I don't know of any way to do this - Samba and the CIFS protocol it sits on top of is implemented on the NBT protocol (NetBios over TCP/iP); there is no 'netbeui' (the local lan protocol that Microsoft uses if you don't want to use tcpip) implementation for Samba that I know of... Don
