Only Netbeui on the client is it possible ?
HI all ! I've read in a doc, that Samba is talking only with the clients where Netbios over TCP/IP is running ! I guess it is true, but are there any solution maybe to connect with a client where only the NETBEUI is the only one installed protocol ? It would be from DOS, I have a DOS boot disk which is waking up the Netbeui, and it would be difficult to prepare it to wake up the TCP/IP ! So maybe somebody have solved this ? Or forget it ? Best Regards ! Viktor Posta

Wine and NetBEUI
...rough both LAN cable and serial (COM) cable. I decided to give this software a try with wine 0.9.60 running on Slackware 12, kernel 2.6.23.4. The software installs without problems and after adding the appropriate registry keys the COM is recognized. But the software complains that it cannot find a NetBEUI-enabled network interface, and there is indeed none. I googled around for a while, searching for a clue how to enable NetBEUI support for linux, but the information in links was vague and rather old. Large amount of links explained that Samba's NetBIOS encapsulates NetBEUI frames over TCP/IP et...

Samba and netbeui
Hello all, There is still a use for netbeui (non-routed protocol) in the network. If you are using a VPN client that does not allow split tunneling, you can still access printers on another local system with netbeui. I would like to remove the windows system and have my print shares on my Linux system with Samba. Is all consideration...

Samba over IPX/NetBeui
Hello: Is it possible to run SAMBA over IPX/NetBeui? (I will thank any suggestion) I hava an small LAN of 3 computers, connected to the Internet through a Cable-modem with DHCP (the cablemodem and the computers are all connected to a hub). The CableModem assigns every computer a random public IP adress, but usually from diferent range (ie: 212.78.x...

Can we still use Samba if routers have netbeui/netbios turned off?
Samba is working perfect on our main subnet, but it won't for any additional subnets on this domain. We use NT authentication and my system is an RS/6000. I just found out that our routers for these additional subnets have netbeui/netbios turned off. Network Admin. said it's because they're set not to allow broadcasting (and they're not going to start), and turning netbeui/netbios on would create additional traffic. As it is, I'm wanting NT PDC to perform all authentication, and if user belongs to the workg...

Do I need NETBIOS/NETBEUI on windows clients when samba is my PDC
...x version is 2.2.16C33_III+VPN. With the WinNT as PDC, all windows client's in the network had only TCP/IP protocol installed and they were able to browse the network and see each other. With Samba running as PDC, TCP/IP only is not enough to browse the network. I had to install NETBIOS or NETBEUI on windows client's machines in order to be able to see others. Do I really need NETBIOS/NETBEUI on the windows clients? Do I need WINS server running on Samba PDC as well? Thank you for the help in advance! best regards

xp machines and samab 2.2.8a problem
...et working just fine for years. I'm trying to add a 3rd subnet. I am having a problem with my XP machines on a third subnet. I have changed the registry so: requiresignorseal = 0 and requiresecurechannel = 0 and rebooted. and Enable NetBIOS over TCPIP is set. I have two XP machines one with NETBEUI install and one without NETBEUI installed the one with NETBEUI installed can onyt see machines with NETBEUI install in the network places (no samba servers) and the XP machine without NETBEUI installed gets the following error when trying to enter the domain: "Mydomain is not accessiable. You...

How does one use a Netbeui name to ping?
Hello, If I wished to ping a windows machine from a Linux box _not_ using the dotted quad address, how can I discover their IP name (using their NetBeui name)? * DNS is not running locally, (does it need too?) * There isn't a local domain, I imagine we're using our ISP's domain name (we're running the lan segment off a switch connected to a DSL modem/router) * Windows and Linux boxes alike get their IP addresses from the DSL...

smbclient for netbeui+core protocol only print servers
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi ! I hope it is of interest to some of you. I have made a small patch to smbclient/netbeui that makes it use only the core protocol for printing, when you give it the -P option. It also supports the continuation of a print job from the point where the error occured (so when you use lprng, it doesn't print the whole job again). There is also a patch to fix a small typo and a missi...

Samba conf. problem - NetBIOS problem?
Thanks to those who wrote and suggested I remove NetBEUI from my Win95 machines. Here's the next chapter in the story: First, based on another suggestion, I tried "netstat -a" on the Win95 machine "secretary". It didn't show any kind of traffic on ports 137-139 (even though files WERE being shared at the time). Next, I t...

1.9.17 printing across subnets
...bourhood all printers (and workstaions for that matter) from BOTH subnets show up correclty. However the users can only print on the printers on "their" side of the subnet. So I have a working tcp/ip net and working netbios over tcp/ip on the two subnets BUT i do NOT have working netbios/netbeui(or whatever it takes) printing across the subnets. Does samba allow printing across subnets? urs rau

Newbie SAMBA Printing question
Can SAMBA be used on Solaris9/SUN OS 5.8 to emulate a MicroSoft NetBeui client and thereby print to a print server. I have a printer(ps) that is netbeui only and want to print to it from a Sparc station. lp and lpr are not available by TCP/IP. Please respond off the board(direct-mail) as I'm sure this is too basic for most users and I did not subscribe to list. I...

Devices not appearing/Manually add devices to Browse List ?
I'm not quite sure whether this is a plain browsing problem, or a wins problems, or ... I had wins running on one machine (Samba(2.0.5a)/SCO Unix), but my main file server on another (Samba (2.2.1a)/Linux). I moved the wins support to the Linux server, and at the same time I made the Linux server the Domain Master Browser, but now some devices have dissapeared from the network. The devices

Domain logon from behind proxy...
I think this has been addressed a few times, but without quite satisfactory results. I have a private subnet behind an NAT proxy server (IPMASQ), and a public subnet on the other side with the NT PDC on the public. (Using both NetBEUI & TCP/IP). The PDC will change later, but currently I'm trying to find out how this all works before I do that. I'm trying to make a client machine on the private side use only TCP/IP, no NetBEUI, and logon to the domain. I've tried various assortments of WINS on the proxy machin...

Samba without TCP/IP
For several reasons (security, resources, and simplicity) is there a project underway to make Samba run without TCP/IP. The FAQ says that there is a desire to make this project work, and that it is stalled. I for one would like to hear from anyone working on this before I dive headlong myself into trying to get Samba to work without TCP/IP. --john

MSDOS on my network
Hello, I am looking for the first time at setting up Linux with Samba as a primary server on our network. I would like to replace my SCO Unix system and a Windows box I use to serve MSDOS machines. The MSDOS server seems to be the stumbling block at this point in my research. I can only run netbEUI on them as far as I know and Samba seems to only talk on TCP/IP. Do you know of a solution? Thanks for any help, Alex Janssen

xcopy failures
...r copying a certain number of files xcopy fails with path not found. On further investigation I figured out that this happens if the number of characters in the directory structure exceeds 48 characters i.e xcopy c:\aa\a\a\a\aa\a\a\a\a\....... , I never used to have this problem when I was using netbeui as my protocol. Since I changed to samba for my lan needs, I have to use the tcp-ip stack. Can anyone out there please help me out with this. Thanks in advance. Sonny Varadan

Where did I go wrong with this Samba configuration?
...S masquerading. The Linux box has two network cards - eth0 connects to the DSL and has a (static) IP address. eth1 connects to the internal network and has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 . The 5 Win95 machines have IP addresses from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.6 . All 5 Win95 machines have TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed and bound to their NICs. All of them can share files with each other (workgroup: MYGROUP). In addition, one of the machines (whose Win95 name is SECRETARY) shares a printer hooked into its printer port. ( \\SECRETARY\LASERJET5 ) So far so good. I've installed Samba 2.0.7 and use...

SAMBA as PDC - Pls Help!
...NS or WINS in the private network. I have downloaded the WinXP patch = ?requirenoseal = 0? My HOSTS File at WinXP machine: (Ip address of the Samba PDC) (NetBios name of the Samba PDC) 192.168.1.1 phoenix Concerns & Questions: 1. Do I need WINS & DNS to set SAMBAas PDC? 2. I installed NetBeui and was able to ping the SAMBA PDC with its NetBios name, without NetBeui I can only ping the IP but without the NetBios name. 3. I can also ping from Samba PDC the WinXP machine. 4. I?ve already disabled the WinXP Personal Firewall Settings. 5. The WinXP in the laptop is freshly installed with the...
