It took a more powerful machine than what I usually carry with me ( a P2/266 w/128MB RAM Thinkpad 600E), but when I got home it played fine on my gaming box.

I had to watch it on windows myself... providing a mpg version of it shouldn''t be too hard, and mpg''s are able to be watched everywhere Something to think about -----Original Message----- From: rails-bounces-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org [mailto:rails-bounces-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org] On Behalf Of Elf M. An Xvid avi would be preferrable to me but I''d settle for mpeg. I also had trouble with mplayer crashing when watching the quicktime files. This was on Ubuntu linux with the latest mplayer and win32 codec .deb packages. Jason

I have now tried latest: ffmpeg, libquicktime, vlc, mplayer and totem. The problem appears to be because of the "Quicktime Animation" codec. From vlc: main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `rle ''. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format. From mplayer: vo: X11 running at 1600x1200 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display) =========================================================================Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg''s libavcodec codec family Selected video codec: [ffqtrle] vfm:ffmpeg (QuickTime Animation (RLE)) =========================================================================Audio: no sound Starting playback... VDec: vo config request - 1024 x 768 (preferred csp: BGRA) Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vf scale... Opening video filter: [scale] VDec: using BGRA as output csp (no 0) Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied. SwScaler: reducing / aligning filtersize 1 -> 4 SwScaler: reducing / aligning filtersize 1 -> 4 SwScaler: reducing / aligning filtersize 1 -> 1 SwScaler: reducing / aligning filtersize 9 -> 8 SwScaler: BICUBIC scaler, from BGRA to Planar YV12 using 3DNOW VO: [xv] 1024x768 => 1024x768 Planar YV12 X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) <crash> From totem: The program ''totem'' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was ''BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)''. (Details: serial 103 error_code 11 request_code 139 minor_code 19) Actually, could this possibly be because the video appears to be in 32-bit color depth? I have tried 32 as a depth setting on my xorg.conf but it doesn''t work (and upon checking the Xorg docs I also found it''s an invalid setting). I''ve tried bleeding-edge everything and am still getting nowhere with it. Can I suggest that perhaps the Rails videos are made available as standard MPEG files, since every media player under the sun can play those? Just seems like a major oversight to have the Rails videos in a format that isn''t easily watchable (yes, I know some of you have managed it, but I have literally tried everything and it''s just not working) using Open Source software. If I didn''t already know how good Rails was, I''d possibly have given up and gone away in frustration by now, or at least been less inclined to try the tutorials out. I''ve generally never had any problems watching any videos of any format other than these particular ones - it''s just, people should see these videos, because they are worth seeing, and provide the initial "wow" that will get people (and got me) to make the switch to Rails. Please give us MPEGs! :-) ~Dave -- Dave Silvester Rent-A-Monkey Website Development Web: http://www.rentamonkey.com/

''Mostly'' solved it by adding the cipherfunk repository: /etc/apt/sources.list deb ftp://cipherfunk.org/pub/packages/ubuntu hoary main apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get install gmplayer w32codecs I could run most any of the rails .mov files that I tried with gmplayer, except for the main 15 minute tutorial. I ended up gmplayer -nosound ... And I could at least see it. I vote we use non-restricted formats when possible.
