[OT^2]: Getting at the fan on an IBM Thinkpad 600E Laptop?
I'm doing a tutorial at Astricon and the plan is to use my laptop as a demo server. Today it failed to boot and after a bit of sleuthing it turns out the fan is sticking from time to time on bootup. Apparently there is a sensor and if no spin, no go. Moving everything right now would be draconian, yet I can't take a chance on a no-boot while at the show. Does anyone know how bad a

code optimization tips
Hi, Being new to R I'm asking for some advice on how to optimize the performance of the following piece of code: > alpha_c <- function(lambda=600e-9,alpha_s=1e-14,N=400,spacing=1e-7){ > > k<-2*pi/lambda > ri<-c(0,0) # particle at the origin > x<-c(-N:N) > positions <- function(N) { > reps <- 2*N+1 > matrix(c(rep(-N:N, each = reps), rep(-N:N, times = reps)), > nrow = 2, byrow = TRUE) >...

R-devel & ATLAS generates Dr. Watson on NT (was RE: Look, Wa tson! La.svd & ATLAS)
Prof. Bates & R-devel, I've done more test with the following results: I have two versions of ATLAS 3.2.1. One was compiled on my old Thinkpad 600E (PII), the other was compiled on my new Thinkpad T22 (PIIISSE1). I compiled R-devel dated 10/31, 11/01 and 11/04, linked against either of the two ATLAS libs. All gave Dr. Watson when given this code: La.svd(matrix(runif(1e5), 1e3, 1e2)) (There's no problem with smaller matrices, say 100x...

error: (XEN) Not enough memory for DOM0 memory reservation.
Dear list, I''m trying to get Xen working on a P3-600E with 320 MB RAM. (256+64) It has suse linux 9.1 installed on it, and I tried to get xen running with both the binary download from the xen pages and the suse xen packages mentioned on this list some days ago. Both ''install packages/kernels'' lead to the same error: (XEN) Not eno...

Lock-up on Thinkpad on AC power restore
Using the current kernel, 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL, my Thinkpad 600E locks up hard when transitioning from battery to AC power. When this happens my only recourse is to power-cycle the machine. There is no indication in the system log of this event when the machine comes back up. Today I caught the event in the act. While the machine was booting, the AC powe...

Why new "SCSI" devices in 4.5 kernel?
I've been running CentOS 4.4 on my Thinkpad 600E machine. Now the new 2.6.9-55 kernel wants to support the SCSI devices I don't have. After the 4.4 --> 4.5 update, on the reboot kudzu informed me that it had detected my PIIX4 controller. Well, OK. That same chipset has been in this machine for 10 years, but if the OS wants to re-det...

connections: remember to close it!
...a result, repeated failed calls to the function generated a bunch of open connections that I can't close. I'm not sure what the consequences of this is. I was able to quit R gracefully, but my NT seemed to have become unstable afterward. System info: R-1.3.1 on WinNT4sp6. IBM Thinkpad 600E with PII and 128MB ram.
