I'm trying to find an R package that will smooth a line with the "polynomial approximation with exponential kernel" or "PAEK" algorithm that is used in ESRI's ArcGIS software. I have a copy of the original paper that provides the algorithm, but I'm not confident in how to code it. The algorithm will smooth a polyline's vertices at a user specified distance along the polyline. The paper refers to this as "smoothing with continuous local weighted averaging." Ultimately, I want to be able to bring in the X-Y coordinates of the vertices into R and perform the smoothing. Limited information on how the algorithm is used in ArcGIS is located here: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/index.cfm?TopicName=How%20Smooth%20Line%20(Data%20Management)%20works<http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/index.cfm?TopicName=How%20Smooth%20Line%20%28Data%20Management%29%20works> The reference to the original paper is: Bodansky, Eugene; Gribov, Alexander; and Pilouk, Morakot, "Smoothing and Compression of Lines Obtained by Raster-to-Vector Conversion", LNCS 2390, Springer, p. 256-265, 2002. I have a PDF copy of the paper that I can send via email. I appreciate any information that will help me accomplish smoothing a line with this algorithm, and/or a comparable one, in R. Thanks.
