which also suggests a workaround.
tN <- table(Ni <- rpois(100, lambda=5))
r <- barplot(as.vector(tN), col='gray')
Alternatively, barplot2 in the gregmisc package should also work.
library(gregmisc)
tN <- table(Ni <- rpois(100, lambda=5))
r <- barplot2(tN, col='gray')
