Thanks to all who offered advice on how to solve a loss of resolution problem involving ps from R, ps -> eps from Acrobat, and Word. It appears that this problem will need to be resolved inside R. If I try to add anything additional (more text, clipart embellishments) to a ps/eps file (using, say, Adobe Acrobat, PaintShop Pro, Powerpoint, or Adobe Illustrator), it gets placed as a separate layer in the finished file. When Adobe exports the file to .eps format it *silently* merges the layers which ends up muddying the rectangles, ellipses, and text from the original postscript file with text and clipart added at the second phase of the graphic editing process. Saving in PNG, TIF, WMF or any other format *after* adding new information does the same thing, and I haven't yet found a way around this. I can solve the text embellishment issue by adding the information at "design" time using plot.rpart, text.rpart, and locator functions in conjunction with "fancy" parameter, but the issue of adding clipart graphics is not one that I've figured out how to solve.
