gday R friends, I was wondering if anyone could help me with some graphics issues please. I'm processing R in batch on redhat6.2 with some graphics to be imported into msword on NT. For scaling within my doco I want some vector type graphics. win.metafile doesn't seem to be supported on redhat which gives me postscript. postscript is ideal but doesn't contain a preview so I can't see it in msword. Is there a way of sticking a preview into postscript? If I ignore vector graphics and use png/jpeg I get x11 colormap limitations. Is bitmap my only alternative? thanks, John Strumila -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) Most easily, use GSView on Windows, which has a menu option to do this. The same author (Russell Lang) has a standalone program epstool that can add (or remove) previews. That has a Unix version, but whether it can add on Unix previews that Word can read, I don't know. GSView/epstool are found on ghostscript sites, once under rjl, now I think under ghostgum.> If I ignore vector graphics and use png/jpeg I get x11 colormap limitations. > > > Is bitmap my only alternative? The only vector graphics formats supported by R on Linux are PostScript and XFig to my knowledge. We do hope to add PDF and WMF one day but the latter in particular is not going to be easy due to lack of documentation (and lack of existing convertors). -- Brian D. So it could possibly be used for kind of a seamless creation of WMF output. Maybe you need to read what it claims it can write: Windows Meta Files (WMF) (Windows 9x/NT only) Enhanced Windows Meta Files (EMF) (Windows 9x/NT only) and of course we already produce those *on Windows*. I don't see how it could help produce E/WMF on Linux. The issue is that all the solutions par two commerical ones that I know of make use of Windows libraries calls and so only run on Windows. There is some Linux code to read Windows Metafiles. Of course, if someone can provide us with a WMF driver on Unix, it would bring this discussion to a close. (Note that I do know how to do it via WMF bitmaps, but that is not what is required here.) -- Brian D. I just installed Corel WP9.0 on my Windows 98 machine, and was surprised when I imported a PS graphic straight from R, and 1) saw the graphic on the screen 2) was able to edit it (change fonts, line styles, etc.) all without converting the files first. StarOffice is not much better, accepting some Postscript files and rejecting others with logic I haven't yet understood. I pine for WordPerfect, which was outstanding at embedding Postscript files, but I don't expect to see it blossom now that Corel has hitched up with M$.
