I am currently running Slakware V3.4 with g77 and R is a 0.62 snapshot of the 27th of May. There appear to be linking problems with the libraries. The error output from mva and eda can be found below. My own libraries also have similar problems. I am running 62.0 April 12 1998 under Slackware 3.4.0, and it compiled painlessly (if that is any help at all). BTW with Slackware you've got to make sure you've got readline library installed. It isn't there in the default distribution.
