as root, you can use 'smbstatus' to list all connections.
Also as root use 'smbcontrol smbd close-share share_name' to close
the given share "share_name".
Close the share(s) you've used for your usb disk.
On very recent samba versions you might need to use:
smbcontrol all close-share share_name
