Rails - Jul 2006 - Trademark registration

Hi,

sorry if this is considered off-topic, however I suspect that this list 
is full of people developing their own web apps who would appreciate 
this kind of information, so:

I was wondering whether anybody would be willing to share his/her 
experience with trademarking a web app''s name(/logo) in the US. What
are
the alternatives, and what is the best/most affordable way to do it?

Call an IP attorney. The first step is to search the USPTO archives for 
the mark you want to protect, to make sure it''s available. When
you''re
convinced it is available, then your attorney will file the necessary 
paperwork and if you''re lucky, you get registration for the mark. If
the
process goes smoothly, it''s several months to a year. Costs depend on a
lot of things (like if you have to defend your mark to the PTO 
examiners). I''d plan to spend about $5k.

Ouch, I didn''t plan to spend $5k for this... Actually, after hearing 
Ryan
Carson (DropSend) saying that he would next time not pay a lawyer for 
this since it''s easy (in the UK), i was kind of hoping that the same is
true in the US. I am wondering whether anybody on this list has done 
this WITHOUT a lawyer?
