Call an IP attorney. The first step is to search the USPTO archives for
the mark you want to protect, to make sure it''s available. When
you''re
convinced it is available, then your attorney will file the necessary
paperwork and if you''re lucky, you get registration for the mark. If
the
process goes smoothly, it''s several months to a year. Costs depend on a
lot of things (like if you have to defend your mark to the PTO
examiners). I''d plan to spend about $5k.
