We have experianced a strang behavior with QuarkXPress files. These files can be opened/modified/saved by user a, user b can open/modify the file but saving is not possible. With all other applications open/modify/save files is possible. We use: SuSE8.1, Samba 2.2.5, reiserfs. Directories/files are set 2770 Thank you for your help Markus

Is this on a MAC or PC? We've had the same problems with Quark on the MACs. We have found this to be independent of the network type (ie. Novell, Samba, or Windows). If the user opens the file across the network, the file will usually become corrupt and they will not be able to save. However, if the user copies the file to their local hard drive first, then works on the files and saves to their local hard drive. They can then successfully copy the file back to the network with no problem. Under Samba, the copies times were significantly faster (on order of 5x) than on Novell (MACs are really slow on NetWare). We have determined this to be a Quark issue and are hoping Quark 6 on OS X will significantly improve the situation. We are also looking at Adobe InDesign as an alternative. We did upgrade to samba 2.2.8a this night. The behavior with QuarkXPress files remains the same... Next step: we will install a new PC W2K with XPress. We did that test with a new PC W2K with XPress. Same error. Then we shared a W2K directory for XPress-files. It works. All users can open/modify/save QuarkXPress files when they have according rights. So, this problem with XPress seems to be a Samba issue. What shell I do next? Do I have to write a "request for bug fix" to the samba team? Thank you for your advice Markus> We did upgrade to samba 2.2.8a this night.
