Gordon,
I did as you suggested, and that seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the
suggestion However, this is contrary to the given docs on how to use CUPS
with Samba, is it not?

Sounds very much like my setup.
In the smb.conf file I have printing=cups and printcap=cups.

Here's a snippet from my smb.conf:
# if you want to automatically load your printer list rather
# than setting them up individually then you'll need this
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes
# It should not be necessary to spell out the print system type unless
# yours is non-standard. Currently supported print systems include:
# bsd, sysv, plp, lprng, aix, hpux, qnx
printing = cups
And, from my cupsd.conf:
# Printcap: the name of the printcap file. Default is /etc/printcap.
# Leave blank to disable printcap file generation.
#
Printcap /etc/printcap
My ignorance is vast, but this setup seems to work for me! Hope it
helps you,
-Gord
