Before you tear everything out, try starting the daemons from the command
line and look for errors.
smbd -h will show you a few helpful options.
Try running smbd -d6 and then tail /etc/var/log/samba/smbd.log for any
info.
Maybe others instances of smbd and nmbd are already running.
