Reading the most recent news, we can see that the time has come to break the WinIntel monopoly on the world. Many devices are emerging, many architectures are being developed. The opensource community is getting great visibility. We should start thinking in bringing wine to this new scenario that is approaching. Many surprises are coming for the years to come. Why not we bring wine to devices such as Androids and iPhones. I know that this should be some huge task, but the latter we start, faster we reach our objectives. If we can make some Windows applications run on top of theses new architectures and systems, we are going to get most attention and maybe new investments in the development of wine.

Wine does not emulate CPU. This design decision was made clear on multiple occasions. For sure you won't ever get i* whatever version of Wine, since apple explicitly prohibits this type of applications. Besides, usefulness of windows desktop programs on smart phones / pads is highly questionable. And if you are looking for such setup you got the wrong device for the job or not trying to find a replacement for 10 years old application.
So Wine will ever be useless on ARM architecture?
fernandocarvalho wrote:> So Wine will ever be useless on ARM architecture? Why useless? You would still be able to run winelib apps (programs compiled with winegcc).
fernandocarvalho I know this is going to be hard to except but we are really at the end of a age in the computer world. x86 emulation really is not that effective on arm. Recompliers will only work with some applications. MS was trying to move to .net to get cpu neutral programs because they could see this end coming. Lot more will have to consider proper porting.
