I get a similar error for another game when running 16 bit only (it runs under
24 bit but is very hard on the eyes).

I have an NVIDIA card but use the noveau drivers, as the proprietary ones
actively won't install on this computer.

My biggest concern, though, is that this same game used to work, no problem.  As
suggested in that Bug Report, was there a breaking change?
