[Xen-users] No Full Virtualisation with Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 Mobile CPU?
Hello, I have some interesting issue with Intel VT CPU and XEN 3.0.2: I''m running XEN 3.0.2 on a MSI Fuzzy 945GM2 Mainboard (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/ic/ic_detail.php?prod_no=4) with a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile CPU (T5500). When booting the mainboard BIOS says it found a EM64T CPU, which is AFAIK the code for a Intel CPU with Virtualisation Technologie. But whether Linux nor XEN detects this CPU as a VT CPU. Who''s right, the mainboard or Linux? Regards Falko _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Intel allows the BIOS to disable the VT instructions at boot time. If the BIOS allows you to enable it (most manufacturers leave it disabled by default) you will need to power-cycle the machine after doing so (just rebooting won''t work - the machine needs to be off for the option to be enabled properly.) - -Karl -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFF0L13r6qWhNgoahURAs94AJ9wVrgIngIMKVf19XxE9uwb5QAjEwCbB+KW KFWDxOlDM5p28LDY0M+Yh64=xiLs -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- __ This communication is intended for the use of the recipient to whom it is addressed, and may contain confidential, personal, and or privileged information. This is NOT directly related to Intel''s VT.> > > > Who''s right, the mainboard or Linux? > > Probably both. Since this is a "can''t clear" bit, once it''s been written, it can''t be reset in software, you''ll have to power-cycle as Karl says. It''s worth noting also that there are BIOS''s that don''t allow this bit to be turned on/off - they just lock it without giving the user any options to change the setting. -- Mats> > - -Karl > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- > Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) > Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org > > iD8DBQFF0L13r6qWhNgoahURAs94AJ9wVrgIngIMKVf19XxE9uwb5QAjEwCbB+KW > KFWDxOlDM5p28LDY0M+Yh64> =xiLs > -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- > > __ > This communication is intended for the use of the > recipient to whom it > is addressed, and may contain confidential, personal, and > or privileged > information. The T5500 does not support VT at all. Neither does the T5200. Talking about mobile Core2Duos, you need at least the T5600 or above. Am Montag, 12. Hi Folks, thanks to all of you for our answers. I just filed a feature request to MSI to implement such BIOS setting, I''ll keep you updated on any news... Are XEN or > Intel pushing the vendors to fix them?If the BIOS is "broken", then there''s nothing other than replacing the BIOS with one that isn''t "broken"... This is because the bit is "sticky", as in you can only set it once, and then it stays set whatever you do until you power-down the processor. [Technically, I think it''s sufficient to pulse the hard-reset pin, aka pwrgood, but since there''s usually no other way than to turn the power off and on again to cause that pin to pulse, it''s no good knowing how it actually works!] I don''t know if Xen is working with motherboard/laptop manufacturers to fix the problem. I would think that the Intel recommendation is to have a switch in the BIOS. Whether each and every motherboard vendor implements that is a different story - and of course "old" motherboards may not get the attention of BIOS development beyond what''s absolutely necessary to sell the motherboards. New boards are more likely to get more development work to make them "good". Finally, it turns out that the particular model of processor doesn''t have VT - in which case the discussion of a switch becomes meaningless. -- Mats _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Yepp, just figured myself... Too bad, but buying a new one w/ VT support w/o knowing if the mobo supports it doesn''t make either...
