[Xen-users] installing xen-3.0.3 on AMD sempron, CentOS4.4
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi I''m currently using xen-3.0.2-testing on several servers. But when xen 3.0.3 was announced I wanted to try it, of course it should have several iprovements and bugfixes, etc. I did the same steps I was previously done in order to compile xen-3.0.2, and in fact xen compiled and installed very cleanly. I created my initrd image and then I modded grub.conf in order to boot from the newly compiled xen.. and to my surprise it came up with a panic: mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none Switching to new root switchroot: mount failed: 22 unmount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I have tried to compile it on several ocassions. On the same PC, it is an AMD sempron with 1GB RAM, 10GB HD. The /boot and / FS is ext3. I have again compiled xen-3.0.2-testing and it works perfectly. Last night I downloaded the RHEL rpms and installed them. I updated grub.conf to use the newly installed kernel/initrd from rpms and again the same problem. I have tried not using LVM2, using LVM2, but no success. I see several people already are using xen-3.0.3 and nobody has, at the moment, reported this issue. Maybe it is related to my hardware configuration? Anyway, it works ok with xen-3.0.2 maybe something has changed that I dont know? I can see it is not an uncommon error, it is sometimes reported. I guess it is related to the kernel not being able to detect the ext3 FS... regards epe -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with CentOS - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFFQPKx8sSWs7RP4EMRAhduAKCaU4v0PhewGyktx5aERNoORvcx9gCeM+W9 rizL/F+B0DL9g3ahbqVQtww=B63R -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

You''re missing the initrd, or your initrd isn''t complete (i.e. it''s missing drivers for your hard-disk driver or filesystem). You can either try to fix the initrd, or get the source and rebuild the vmlinuz to have "builtin" drivers for your type of hard-disk/filesystem/etc. -- Mats _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Same issue on an older system this morning... mkinitrd -v -f initrd-2.6.16.29-xen_3.0.3.0.img 2.6.16.29-xen_3.0.3.0 --with=ide-disk --with=sd_mod --with=ide-generic --with=ext3 --with=piix --with=sym53c8xx ide-generic is what did it for me... Hello all, Friday, October 27, 2006, 11:54:15 PM, you wrote:> Same issue on an older system this morning...> mkinitrd -v -f initrd-2.6.16.29-xen_3.0.3.0.img 2.6.16.29-xen_3.0.3.0 > --with=ide-disk --with=sd_mod --with=ide-generic --with=ext3 --with=piix > --with=sym53c8xx> ide-generic is what did it for me...I would say when you use --with=ide-generic first it will catch system basics and you will not get DMA to work. I have tested this on my system. I have had to "preload" piix and it821x drivers first to have the DMA available again on all drivers --preload=piix --preload=it821x of course this is only a option for those who do not have those drivers compiled into the kernel or are using rpm from xensourse download repository. -- Best regards, Martin Mosny -- Best regards, Martin mailto:mmosny@voxel.sk _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I found that copying my old centos kernel config from /boot into the xen/linux2.6...-xen/ directory (as .config), running "make oldconfig" and then rebuilding gave me a kernel/modules which worked. There must be something missing in the config, although I haven''t been able to find exactly what. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
