[Xen-users] DomU install using Yast2 xen can''t find CDROM installation source (HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed)
Team, I''m using an OpenSuSE 10.1 dom0 host at 2.6.16.13-4-xen with xen-3.0.2_09656-4. (the stock configuration, I''d say) Plop the DVD in the CDROM, fire up the install, the initrd is detected, linuxrc starts but fails with Could not find the SUSE Linux Installation Source Activating manual setup program. OK, detach the block device, re-attach the block device (why, I don''t know, because it''s already seen the initrd from the CDROM) # xm block-attach 1 phy:hda hda r On reattach, my XTERM console window burps with hda: unknown partition table ata_id[896]: main: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for ''/dev/.tmp-3-0'' And that''s as far as I get. Any ideas? _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Any ideas?Try a network install (export the dvd via nfs or http, then specify the url as installation source). cheers, Gerd -- Gerd Hoffmann <kraxel@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~kraxel/julika-dora.jpeg _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Hi,> Could not find the SUSE Linux Installation Source > Activating manual setup program. It''s SUSE 10.1''s defect. In coming 10.2 this would be improved. Actually, In Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 Server Xen works well with CD-ROM installation. You could get 10.2 development version http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version Or SLES10 evaluation http://www.novell.com/ Noniko hitumabushi@jcom.home.ne.jp _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Re: [Xen-users] DomU install using Yast2 xen can''t find CDROM installation source (HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed)
I agree completely. I have never had a good DomU creation with SuSE 10.1 on a 64-bit machine It always crashes just after installing the kernel-xen to the new install with 88 packages to go. Personally I think Novell should have delayed a month releasing 10.1. The trouble with the new update, rug, is a nightmare. I did create a DomU with 10.1 using the 32-bit kernel on an old Dell with a pair of Pentium II. If there would be a way to create a DVD with the current rpm updates you might be able to do it. However they have some new way of signing the installation. See http://en.opensuse.org/Making_a_DVD_from_CDs . Forget trying to create using CD''s. That is hopeless. I once got it to read the first CD but couldn''t swap CD''s when requested. I did try the published way of block-list/detach/attach with no success. Finally ended up by copying the DVD to an iso file on the hard drive, dd /dev/dvd suse10_1.iso. Then installing from that iso. After a month and a half of frustration I downloaded a trial version of SLES 10 and it worked as advertised. Still can''t figure out how to easily create a vm2 from the first vm1 without installing from the DVD. Right now it is more of a sledge hammer approach. Create a copy of both the configuration file in /etc/xen/vm/ and the image file in /var/lib/xen/image/. Increment the vm name by one, vm1 becomes vm2. Edit the config file to point to the copied image and change the name. Then do an xm create and go to the console to adjust the network card configuration. I have document this approach and if anyone wants a copy of my notes drop me an e-mail. I am doing this work for a Master''s project at Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan. Once the final paper is done I plan to make it available to the community. Possibly be able to creat a HOWTO for Xen on SeSE. We lost the graduate network classroom and had to merge with the undergrad program. The space was not present for the additional pc''s so they had to be shared. We couldn''t leave the machine up in Linux 24/7 due to other student needs. The solution was a server running Domain0 and twenty guests. Perfect environment for Xen. Because most of the students are communters they need to acces their Linux box from off campus via SSH. Re: [Xen-users] DomU install using Yast2 xen can''t find CDROM installation source (HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed)
As I mentioned previously to Gerd, a network install won''t work if dom0 networking is broken. I updated to Alpha2 with the same error. No help. I''ll try to grab a copy of SLES 10 and see if that works. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

SLES 10, same error. I must admit Xen is one of the least usable products I''ve come across in quite a while. Very discouraging. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Hi> SLES 10, same error. I must admit Xen is one of the least usable products I''ve come across in quite a while.Mmmmm.... Is the problem only on CD usage? Has your Xen env succeeded in the classical way of making image file manually? I use yast2 dirinstall from the xen server on the ''disk'' assigned for the virtual machine. Then a few tweaks to the /etc/fstab and /etc/inittab files and I can create the virtual machine. One gotcha is that you need to disable any update installation sources on the xen server as the zen update stuff gets in a mangle and won''t release the mounted disk for ages. I think it''s getting confused over what needs updating on the server and the dirinstall area. Just run the update from within the virtual machine after you''ve got networking set up. Re: [Xen-users] DomU install using Yast2 xen can''t find CDROM installation source (HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed)
Team, Some success, finally! dom0 - SLES10 domU - OpenSuSE (SLES installation source) install via DVD ISO or DVD CDROM The init/linuxrc script would run but complain that it couldn''t find the installation source (the installation source mapped to hdb in the configuration file) I jumped through hoops detaching-attaching the block device, seeing the ''can''t find installation source'' message every time. This worked for me: When linuxrc fails with "Could not find the SUSE Linux Installation Source. Activating manual setup program." - press <enter> to acknowledge the OK button - select the language - choose a keyboard map - start installation or system - start installation or update - choose the source medium -> hard disk - (optional) configure vnc - enter the hard disk partition -> hdb (the installation source) - enter the source directory -> (leave blank) Installation continues... Thanks for all the help. On 9/8/06, Matthew Wild <M.Wild@rl.ac.uk> wrote:> > On Friday 08 September 2006 05:59, Noniko wrote: > > Hi > > > > > SLES 10, same error.
