[Xen-users] Paravirtualization, new installation from cdrom
Is it possible to do a fresh install from a cd in paravirtualization mode ? just like the full virtualization, where you tell where''s your iso and then you boot and install the new OS if it''s possible, what''s the problem here, here''s my boot.msg and my xen domain config file. I''m running SLES 10 beta 11 x64 and I''m trying to use the yast2 xen module to install this new vm and I''m trying to install sles 10 beta 11 x64 ( the same version as Dom0 ). now the installation seem to boot but i''m unable to install anything since the installation is unable to acces the cdrom.. # xm list Name ID Mem(MiB) VCPUs State Time(s) DEB32-HVM 5 1000 1 -b---- 2520.2 Domain-0 0 1995 16 r----- 19643.0 WindowsXP-HVM 6 1000 1 -b---- 344.9 debianrs 7 128 1 -b---- 24.9 vm1 12 256 1 -b---- 5.1 ===================================# cat vm/vm1 disk = [ ''file:/mnt/mv/vm1/hda,hda,w'', ''phy:sr0,hdb,r'' ] memory = 256 vcpus = 1 builder = ''linux'' kernel = ''/tmp/YaST2-10396-6vObw7/vmlinuz-2.6.16.11-7-xen'' ramdisk = ''/tmp/YaST2-10396-6vObw7/inst-initrd'' name = ''vm1'' vif = [ ''mac=00:16:3e:14:a8:b7'' ] localtime = 0 on_poweroff = ''destroy'' on_reboot = ''destroy'' on_crash = ''destroy'' extra = ''install=/dev/sr0 TERM=xterm textmode=1'' =================================== # cat /var/log/boot.msg Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.16.11-7-xen Loaded 21826 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.6.16.11-7-xen. Long version: you need to have a modified kernel on that cdrom that you can boot, and figure out all the params that need to be passed to it to use the cd''s extra goodies... all in all, probably won''t work well without way too much work. I would want to be able to use any distro CD or iso and be able to bootstrap a new environment (as if I had hit ctrl-alt-del on any other machine); more like how VMWare actually emulates the bios and begins a fresh boot process. It would make installation of things like mythtv or asterisk at home a whole lot easier but I imagine we would run into problems when the guest''s instance of grub or lilo decides to try to write to the mbr. At this point the only thing I could think could get you closest to it at this stage is to use the initrd images on these isos and hope the scripts don''t barf on you. That also avoids switching CDs btw ;) Just copy the iso images to some machine on the network (could also be the xen host machine), loop-mount them at some place, in subdirectories named "CD1" "CD2", ... and export this tree via http or ftp. Then pass the URL of the CD1 directory to the yast2 xen installer module as installation source. cheers, Gerd -- Gerd Hoffmann <kraxel@suse.de> Erst mal heiraten, ein, zwei Kinder, und wenn alles läuft geh'' ich nach drei Jahren mit der Familie an die Börse. http://www.suse.de/~kraxel/julika-dora.jpeg _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
